THE COAL ASH PROBLEM: The US produces more than 1 BILLION TONS of coal ash every year from burning coal, but incredibly there is not a single federal regulation for this toxic waste.  Despite a devastating coal ash spill in Tennessee five years ago that destroyed 40 homes and contaminated local rivers with toxic sludge, the EPA is still dragging its feet on new coal ash regulations.
