Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) is one of the earliest recorded female artists, and is often cited as a role model for other female artists of the time. Born into a noble family, she was provided with instruction in painting and music. She was invited to join the court of Philip II of Spain as a painter of portraits, though none of her works from this period survive. She achieved fame and fortune in her lifetime and continued to paint into old age
