Permeable Patio | The Sustainable Garden | Photos | This Old House

  • Ronica Ellis

Permeable Patio - A foot of crushed rock, a layer of landscape fabric, and an inch of sand form the base of the backyard patio. Ribbons of stones between aggregate pavers. Then swept a commercial compost made from garden clippings and vegetable trimmings into the spaces between the pavers to promote feathery moss growing in the gaps.

Interplanting concrete pavers with mondo grass around your pool makes for a pool deck that's got a more natural feel, plus the grass just feels cushy and cool on your feet.
