I looks like Portland, Maine would be the good city for this destination. The cheapest place to stay I've currently found is $125 a night 1 bath 1 bed and sleeps four (but there's a good amount of floor space and we could probably fit two in the bed.) For a drive, it's about a 13 hour drive, so we'd either have to start early in the morning, or stay over night along the way. That's what I've found so far.

Went here in 2007--Flew into Boston, spent a day and then drove up to Bar Harbor, Maine. Gorgeous. #berlissy

This odd-shaped building sits squarely in the center of downtown Portland, on Burnside street. My brother-in-law ( a printer/pressman) worked in that building for many years.
