"But when it came right down to it, the skin of my wrist looked so white and defenseless that I couldn't do it. It was as if what I wanted to kill wasn't in that skin or the thin blue pulse that jumped under my thumb, but somewhere else, deeper, more secret, and a whole lot harder to get." - The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
The Bell Jar - Sylvia Plath Hyped for good reason. Bright, pretty twentysomething New York women's magazine intern in the Mad Men age falls into a deep depression and has a stint in a mental hospital, paid for by an elderly benefactress. Twentysomething angst has been the same since the caveman years.

Awesome Book & Movie.
In this book, the author strings you along. She doles out just enough information to make you think you've figured things out before she hits you with another revelation that changes everything. The way the story ends shows what a truly sick relationship Nick and Amy had. The path is twisted, disturbing, and irresistible.

We are all damaged goods. It is what you choose to do with what is left over that determines if you will still be a gift or a burden to yourself and to others. And on the day of Philip Seymour Hoffman's untimely and senseless death, I just finished a book by someone whose journey of body and soul likely saved her from a similar demise. "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed is a book worth reading. I highly recommend it to everyone, so that you too can be a gift.
This memoir, an Oprah's Book Club favorite, tells the story of Cheryl Strayed's 3-month, 1,100-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, from the Mojave Desert in Nevada to Washington State via California and Oregon. She started out on this epic journey after her mom passed away, her marriage crumbled, and her sibling relationships fell apart. Strayed's spirit carries her through all of the arduous trials - both mental and physical - this journey throws at her.

kindles don't have this kind of magic. The smell of really old books. The ache of reading little notes written to people long dead. The dry rustle of paper. The wrinkles in a book read in the bath. Lending books to special people...
"Kindles don't have this kind of magic." I don't believe that people who have Kindles are real book lovers. haha ;)
kindles don't have this kind of magic. Real books will always have relevance, there's nothing like the smell of an old book, or a new one for that matter. Gotta admit, I love the Kindle app for living on an island with a limited selection though. True Bibliophiles gobble up whatever they can get their hands on. Love to read an old book with history, though.
I'v always been inerested in taking photos then put a quote or meaning on top of it to explain the photo in more detail. #semiphoto #Book #Books Worth Reading #Books to Read #Semiphoto
I find this to be especially true of old books. Admit it, all true booklovers have picked up a good aged book, opened the pages and smelled that sucker.

LOVE this book! The protagonist is so vivid (gifted teenager) and the Paris apartment politics so hilarious.
December 2009. 12 year-old Paloma is going to kill herself on her 13th birthday because she can't tolerate the bourgeois life she finds herself in, while the concierge of the lavish Paris apartment building is anything but what she pretends to be. Tolstoy's Anna Karenina has some influence. Note: The movie is lyrical and exquisite!
Definitely one of my all time favorite books. Granted, different strokes for different folks, but this book will for sure stroke the folks who like a good think along with a good read :)
For Kristen The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Highly recommended. Great characters, wonderful descriptive writing. The favorite book I have read this year.
This is my new favorite book. I read it and when I finished it, I opened it up to start reading it again. Highly recommend this one!
The Elegance of the Hedgehog (French: L'élégance du hérisson) is a novel by the French novelist and professor of philosophy Muriel Barbery. The book follows events in the life of a concierge, Renée Michel, whose deliberately concealed intelligence is uncovered by an unstable but intellectually precocious girl named Paloma Josse. Paloma is the daughter of an upper-class family living in the upscale Parisian apartment building where Renée works. Featuring a number of er...

Investigative journalist Barbara Ehrenreich spent 18 months working one or more minimum-wage jobs, attempting to reveal the very real fiscal struggles behind policies ostensibly meant to keep them afloat. So often, their economic situations have less to do with laziness and an inability to "Grab those bootstraps, boys" and stem almost entirely from a flawed system.
2010 Top Ten Banned Book Reasons: Drugs, inaccurate, offensive language, political viewpoint, religious viewpoint
"Author Barbara Ehrenreich relates her experiences from 1998 to 2000, during which time joined the ranks of the working poor as a waitress, hotel housekeeper, cleaning woman, nursing home aide, and Wal-Mart clerk to see for herself how America's "unskilled" workers are able to survive on only $6 or $7 an hour."
Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America - Kindle edition by Barbara Ehrenreich. Politics & Social Sciences Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.
Barbara Ehrenreich gets at the heart of the problem of low-wage work. #WomenEmployed is working to improve low-wage jobs to help more women achieve economic security. Visit womenemployed.org to learn more.
An excellent book about a woman trying to live her life working minimum wage jobs. Shows how difficult life can be for those in unskilled jobs in this society. But I have to admire her commitment to earn her own money instead of opting for government programs.
To find out if individuals can survive on the "wages available to the unskilled," journalist Ehrenreich spent 12 months working at a variety of minimum-wage jobs. Her experiences offer a gritty glimpse into the world of day-to-day work, a stark picture of living from hand to mouth, and a personal perspective on the politics of welfare.
On the "to read" list.
