This time of year, my Grampa always had bowls of walnuts (and other nuts) in their shells with nut crackers on every table. I remember sitting for hours and cracking open walnuts and almonds and filberts and pecans with him. He hadn't set out bowls of nuts in years, but somehow this year, so soon after his passing, I miss it most of all. they had a huge English Walnut tree in their yard and grandpa would gather them all up and dry them in their attic...and then at Christmas time we would have big bowls of these gems to crack and munch on....he gave us a sapling and that tree is still in my parents yard today....61 years old...
Walnuts contain a number of compounds with anti-tumor effects. One of these, ellagic acid, has been shown to inhibit colon cancer cell proliferation and angiogenesis in a number of laboratory studies. Flaxseed oil has a similar effect as walnuts on tumor growth, but doesn not suppress angiogenesis to the same degree.
