1. The Chêne chapelle (Oak Chapel) is an oak tree located in Allouville-Bellefosse in Seine-Maritime, France. The oak tree is between 800 and 1,200 years old. It is 15m (50ft) high and its base has a circumference of 16m (53 ft).
We've all seen neat tree houses, but did you know that there's a tree church? In France, the Chêne Chappelle (Chapel Oak) is 800 years old, houses two tiny chapels in its hollow trunk, and was said to have been visited by William the Conqueror himself.
In the french village of Allouville-Bellefosse the Chêne Chapelle (Oak Chapel) is a chapel built into an oak tree. There is a wooden staircase spiraling around the ancient tree, leading up to a couple of chambers for worship. The tree is said to be the oldest tree in France

This is a ceramic house built in Colombia by the architect Octavio Mendoza. Ceramic houses are made by sculpting the building out of clay (or using adobe blocks) then firing the building to a high heat. This basically makes the building into a single brick (or terracotta pot), impervious to water, resistant to damage from earthquakes, and comfortably cool in hot climates.

These actually exist, and they're part of a hair-raising gallery of "gravity-defying homes" over at Elle Decor. "Architect Piet Blom tipped a conventional house forty-five degrees and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pole so that three sides face down and the other three face the sky." It's cool and futuristic-looking, but also alarming.

Cube houses (Kubuswoningen) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands Dutch architect Piet Blom used trees as an inspiration for this village of sorts, ...
Cube Houses Este particular diseño conocido como las “casas de cubos” las puedes visitar en Rotterdam, en Holanda. Fue obra de Piet Blom en 1984.
Rotterdam - Kubuswoningen, or cube houses, are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond designed by architect Piet Blom in 1984. The houses in Rotterdam are located on Overblaak Street, and beside the Blaak Subway Station. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. There are 38 small cubes and two so called 'super-cubes', all attached to each other.
Kubuswoningen, or cube houses, are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in The Netherlands. Designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.

The conch shell house was built using a fairly traditional foundation, such as concrete, as well as recycled and found materials. The owner of the house Octavio Ocampo is a well known artist, whose brother Eduardo is an architect. The house has no corners, it’s interior is decorated with corals, shells and other items found on the local beach.

Conch Shell House, Octavio Ocampo Isla Mujeres, Mexico While Mexican artist Octavio Ocampo’s Casa Caracol — Conch Shell House — doesn’t exactly blend seamlessly into the natural environment like some of these other homes, you’ve got to hand it to him for really sticking with the nautical theme and running with it. Plus, he’s provided lost tourists with the ultimate in directional landmarks: Just take a left at the giant conch shell house on the corner and walk 50 meters.

Takasugi-an Tea House, Chino, Nagano, Japan The literal translation of this statuesque building designed by Japanese architect Terunobo Fujimori is "a teahouse [built] too high". It is six metres above the ground, atop two chesnut treetrunks - once you make it up of the ladders, it's a peaceful place to drink tea and watch the world go by.

Takasugi-an Tea House, Chino, Japan, is built on top of two chestnut trees cut from a nearby mountain and brought to this patch of land in 2009. What's distinctive about this dwelling is that it's as much tea house as treehouse, having been designed by Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori following in the tradition of his country's tea masters.
Architect Terunobu Fujimori's "tea house placed too high" (as the name translates loosely) responds to an ancient tradition, in which tea masters were designing and building their teahouses themselves

EMPHASIS: Emphasis in a composition can be achieved through the use of contrast, isolation, placement, or even the absence of a focal point so that an object or part of the composition stands out by itself. The location of this home places an emphasis on it's design connecting with nature by it's location and use of glass to bring the outside in.

The Ring House - Nagano - Japan - TNA Architecture - Completed in July 2006, the Ring House ( aka Nagano House), is a beautiful example of simple, clean, modern architecture, that does nothing to detract from the amazing forest it is in.
I wish the building had a bit of a warmer appearance to it to contrast with the snow. Looks like a great place to have Christmas parties though :)
Nagano House, Japan by Takei-Nabeshima-Architects (TNA) tna-arch.com The house is wrapped in rings of glass and wood and has an beautiful uninterrupted 360 view of the forest. TNA Architects designed rings around the facade so that issue of private spaces and utilities could be met. The height of each ring was decided by the function concealed behind it. The glass between the rings allow you to look straight into the forest, so the whole house appears to dissolve into the woods.

John Ford House | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
"The Ford House was built in 1887 as part of a large tract of simple middle-class homes in downtown Los Angeles built by the Beaudry Brothers. It would be unremarkable today if not for its original owner, John J. Ford, a very prolific and well-known wood carver. Ford's works include carvings for the California State Capital, the Iolani Palace in Hawaii, and Leland Standford's private railroad car. John Ford purchased the home as it was being completed. At the height of the Industrial Revolution when all decorative elements for house exteriors were being mass produced, Ford used his skills as a woodcarver to adorn his home. The exterior and interior carvings were all done by hand in ornate, one-of-a-kind patterns. The house, a combination of Italianate and Queen Anne styles, was located on Beaudry Street, between First and Third Streets in downtown Los Angeles. Over the years, the interior was altered several times, including its use as a four apartment complex. However, the Ford House will be restored to its original condition." www.heritagesquare.org/Ford.htm
