Yoyo wall art--I'm trying to decide whether to complete a quilt or a wall hanging with the yoyo's I'm making.
DIY Yo-Yo Art Wall Hanging - fabric yo-yos mounted on a painted artist's canvas. Notice how some are turned upside down. Step-by-step tutorial.
Yo-Yo Art Plain-Jane yo-yos are elevated to a new level when mounted on a painted artist's canvas and presented as a wall hanging. These yo-yos, all fashioned from Kaffe Fassett prints for Westminster Fabrics, are assembled in an unorthodox manner; some are right side up and others are upside down to show off the colorful prints. Sew yo-yos together; then attach them to the edge of the frame. #

Cascade quilt using Kaffe Fassett fabrics. - love the color combo
I'm playing along with the fun series My Favorite Quilt over at SewMamaSew. Pop over and get a peek at some wonderful quilts and read along to see why they are favorites. Tell us about your favorite quilt. When did you make it? What pattern did you use? My all time favorite quilt is Cascade. I'm a huge fan of Kaffe Fassett fabrics and look to create designs that can showcase the fabrics well. The original design for Cascade had been taped to my wall for a good number of months before I finally started pulling fabrics and playing around. That was about four years ago. I have since gone on to create a pattern for the design and it's proven to be quite popular. What do you like best about the quilt? One of the things I like best about this quilt is the combinations of fabrics. I'm particularly drawn in by beautiful large scale prints and love letting my eye wander around the surface of the quilt taking in all the different prints. The other thing I love is the color scheme. The refreshing greens and aquas of the color palette along with the spark of purple just feel so relaxing and fresh to me. As the quilt evolved it began to evoke images of being in a lush tropical garden and viewing the foliage though the cascade of a waterfall . . . thus the name Cascade. One of these days I'd like to get a really nice photo of the quilt next to a waterfall but for now these will do nicely. What memories or people does the quilt make you think of? This quilt will always make me think of my daughter because she loved it so much she took it to college with her to hang on a big wall in her apartment. It will forever be hers. : ) How did you grow as a quilter while making it? I grew as a quilter more in the area of design than actual quilting skills because Cascade is such an easy quilt to make. I did play with new machine quilting ideas by using free form curved lines done with my walking foot and variegated thread. I think it complements and softens the shapes of the triangles quite nicely. I also didn't want the scraps from the trimmed corners going to waste so I made three pillows from the leftovers. Now I look for ways to put scraps to use right as the quilt top is being sewn. If you could make this quilt again, what (if anything) would you do differently? I have remade this quilt design several times, each time discovering a different way to use the basic concept and come up with something totally new. I absolutely love the design process and finding ways to bring a new and different look to the same design. This exploration has become a regular part of my patterns. Here's a few of the variations I've made along with the bonus projects from the scraps. If you read my blog you've seen this one before, but I hope you enjoyed reminiscing with me about My Favorite Quilt. What's your favorite quilt?
A scrappy quilt made from the Cascade pattern by SpringLeaf Studios. This quilt features an assortment of fabrics by Kaffe Fassett and Michael Miller. See www.springleafstudios.com/p/patterns.html for where to buy the pattern.
Cascade is a great modern quilt pattern loaded with extras! This pattern includes two basic versions. Choose either a scrappy eclectic look or a controlled geometric zigzag look. A versatile pattern that’s sized to work with layer cakes, large scraps, fat quarters or yardage. It looks great made with solids, prints of all scales, or a combination of solids and prints. Variety is key to the scrappy version. A controlled color/value palette is key to the ZigZag version. Pattern includes guidelines for selecting fabrics, detailed illustrations and easy-to-follow sewing tips, plus complete binding instructions. Use the Design Explorations page, which shows 7 additional ideas, to make entirely different looking quilts from the same basic design. There’s even a coloring page that allows you to try your own color choices. Plus, when you follow my easy-to-sew directions, you’ll have extra pieced blocks made from the trimmed leftovers to make a bonus pillow using the included directions. Cascade has so many possibilities I hope you’ll want to make more than one! Baby Size: 42 1/2” x 51” Lap/Twin Size: 59 1/2” x 85” Full/Queen Size: 93 1/2” x 93 1/2” Yardage varies based on quilt size and version. Complete yardage requirements included. This pattern may be used to make up to 6 quilts for sale only with written permission of the designer Anne Deister. Credit for the design must be attributed to Anne Deister/SpringLeaf Studios. Please do not copy or sell the pattern. Enjoy your quilt and make it your own. Follow my blog for all the latest pattern and quilting news. www.springleafstudios.com

I made a new pincushion. Yes, I know that I need another pincushion like I need a hole in the head. I can't help myself and I can guarantee you that this probably won't be the last one that I make either. I've been playing around with what I call a folded hexagon yo-yo. I know you quilters probably have another name for these. I have referred to them as yo-yo's for as long as I can remember so I guess I will continue to do so. As they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I don't qualify as a dog (I hope) but I qualify as old. By the way, I was born in The Territory of Hawaii. Yes, that is what my birth certificate says. Hawaii wasn't even a state yet. So you can believe me when I say that I am old. I digress. Where were we? Oh, the folded hexagon yo-yo's and pincushions. Well, my yo-yo's were stitched onto the pincushion by hand (you could do it by sewing machine too) prior to folding so that the stitches are hidden inside the yo-yo. They're done in a similar fashion to attaching the round yo-yo's to quilts or other fabric objects. These are folded fabric flowers attached to color coordinated bobby pins for little girls to wear in their hair. Those little white marks on the flowers are supposed to be polka dots. There are so many folds in the flower petals that the polka dots kind of disappeared. I guess I need to use smaller polka dots on these flowers or nix the polka dots altogether. I hope you all have a good day. Aloha!
**This tutorial is intended for personal use only.** I would like to show you how I have been attaching fabric yo-yo's to my projects with this tutorial. I have been doing it this way for over 25 years. When I first started attaching yo-yo's to projects, it was always difficult to keep the ends from flipping up or if I tacked them down, the stitches would always show. Instead of hand-tacking a finished yo-yo to a project, I use the sewing machine to do the initial anchoring. (You can also hand stitch the initial anchoring too). This tutorial will show you how to do this and then turn it into a lovely pincushion in the end. This is my first tutorial so please be gentle. Here goes.... The first step is to cut one 5-inch fabric circle. This will be for the yo-yo in this project. Also, cut two 5-1/2-inch circles. This will be the top and bottom of your pincushion. They can be both from the same fabric or one each from a contrasting fabric. Please note: A 5-inch fabric circle will make a 2-1/4-inch yo-yo. Since the yo-yo will end up being 2-1/4 inches, trace a 2-1/4-inch circle in the middle of the fabric yo-yo on the wrong side. It should look like this: Place the right side of your yo-yo circle to the right side of the top of the pincushion circle with the yo-yo side facing up. Pin in place. It should look like this: Use your sewing machine to stitch completely around the circle you just drew. Now, take needle and thread and hand sew the yo-yo using a 1/4-inch running stitch. Make sure to turn the raw edges in 1/4-inch as you sew. It will look like this: If you'd like to give your yo-yo some body, this is the time to place some fiberfil in the center. It should look like this: Pull the thread tight and knot off. This is your completed yo-yo attached to your pincushion top. This yo-yo isn't going anywhere. It won't lift up on the edges or shift and become lopsided. To make the pincushion, pin the upper pincushion circle to the bottom pincushion circle, right sides together. It will look like this: This is what the back of my pincushion looks like: Stitch by machine around the edge using a 1/4-inch seam. Be sure to leave a 1-inch opening for turning. It should look like this: Turn right sides out and it will look like this: To complete your pincushin, stuff with fiberfil or your preferred stuffing and handstitch the opening closed using a slip stitch. You can stop at this point and you will have a lovely pincushion. As you can see, I went a little further as my pincushion has a handsewn ricrac embellishment, a button center and also has been tufted. Embellish as you please and most of all, have fun. I hope this tutorial has been helpful. Many people have asked me how I get my yo-yo's to look so neat on my projects and it was always hard to explain it to them. Now, my friends, you have the inside scoop and complete with pictures to boot. Enjoy! Aloha! **This tutorial is intended for personal use only.**
