Meteora, Greece: six magnificent monasteries still exist, precariously perched atop 1,300 feet high sandstone pinnacles. Hermit monks constructed the first monastery before nuns came to build too. Access to each monastery was crazy, a leap of faith, climbing rocks, and ladders lashed together or large nets until the ropes would break. The bizarre but beautiful monasteries of Meteora are centuries old and isted by UNESCO World Heritage.

The magnificent & isolated monasteries of Meteora is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece. The monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Peneios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. It is well worth the minimum of 2 days you will spend on the road getting to and from just to see the wonder of this place.

Roussanou Monastery, Meteora, Greece. [Featured in Richard Halliburton's Book of Marvels from the late 1930s, but he didn't have an aerial photo like this one.]

Agia Triada Monastery is probably the most dramatically positioned monastery of the complex, as it is perched on the top of a delicate pinnacle, accessible only by 140 steep steps.
