⊰ Posing with Posies ⊱ paintings of women and flowers - Frida Kahlo. Self Portrait Dedicated to Dr Eloesser
'Self Portrait with Thorn Necklace' by Frida Kahlo. The band says: "I painted my portrait in the year 1940 for Doctor Leo Eloesser, my physician and best friend. With all my affection. Frida Kahlo". (Those hand earrings were a gift from Picasso.)
An artist most well known for her self-portraits is Frida Kahlo. She used this particular genre of painting to record events in her life and to express her feelings of pain and frustration. Because she spent a great deal of time confined to bed, she created much of her art while in the supine position, and used a mirror (attached to the bed above her) to do her work.
Artist: Frida Kahlo Title: "Self Portrait Dedicated to Dr. Eloesser" Medium: oil on masonite Size: 59.5 x 40 cm Date:1940 Ownership: Private Collection Comments: Kahlo wearing her pain as a necklace of thorns. I like that she looks so strong in this portrait.
FRIDA KHALO | Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera Coming to AGO
Happy Birthday Frida! Frida Kahlo de Rivera was born on July 6, 1907 in Mexico City, Mexico. Kahlo’s work is famed throughout Mexico and by feminist around the world. She ended her study of medicine to focus on her paintings. She began painting after a car accident that caused her to be immobile for three months. Her marriage to Diego Rivera was inconsistent and her health was problematic. Frida Kahlo is best known for her series of self portraits, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best”.Her paintings are described with pain as she would draw her life experiences that involved her marriage, miscarriages, and operations. Frida has created 140 paintings in her lifetime, of those are 55 self portraits. On July 13,1954, Kahlo died of pulmonary embolism and was cremated. Days before her death she wrote “I hope the exit is joyful — and I hope never to return — Frida”

Life Magazine #fridakahlo "Child of my heart Tomorrow is another day" Sung in a small Mexico City gallery last week, this serenade was the climax of a long and happy evening for the frail, dark-eyed woman lying there in a great four-poster bed. She was Frida Kahlo, invalid wife of Muralist Diego Rivera and Mexico's best woman painter (TIME, Nov. 14, 1938). For her first public show in Mexico, 200 friends, fellow artists and critics had turned out to sing, sip Scotch, and applaud.

To rebel against him, she cut off all her beautiful long black hair. The Cinzano bottle she holds represents the unborn child she could never give him.
