I read this book awhile back while I was in school. It's a beautiful story of a little girl in Nazi Germany who learns to read - and as a result finds a passion for writing - from her adopted father (who poses as a Nazi but is really hiding a Jewish man in the basement), as well as the man in the basement who is kept a secret for the entire book. Narrated by a charming and witty angel of death, this is definitely a must-read.
