Hoot Hoot I Scream. An actual structure built in 1927 on Valley Blvd in Rosemead, CA. A year later it was moved to South Gate, in hopes of more business. In 1930, it was turned into a cafe and stayed in South Gate through World War II serving factory workers. After the war, the wrecking ball reduced the Hoot-Hoot Cafe to the history pages . Postcard, 1900s. What's really fascinating with this photo is that, with the type of photography used in this era, the subjects had to stay very still for a decent period of time to get such a crisp image. Poor girl.
Jenni, you are going to laugh (or maybe not) this reminds me of the pictures I have seen when you were a little girl
French postcard, early 1900's -- I wonder who thought "hey, this bird biting this little girl would make a great postcard!" ????

Wish there were still places like this... Children enjoying ice cream at the Hoot Hoot I Scream hut in Los Angeles, CA - c. 1930s The head rotated; the eyes, made from Buick headlamps, blinked; the sign: Hoot hoot, I scream, used elements of a theater marquee. For over 50 years, Tillie Hattrup ran this L.A.-area refreshment spot designed and built by her husband, Roy in 1926-27. It was demolished in 1979.

Hoot Hoot Ice Cream, 1935, photographer unknown. This Los Angeles frozen dessert shack was likely built in the 1920′s and was still standing in 1940. I’m not sure when it was torn down, or better yet, why it was torn down. What kind of monster removes a building that is shaped like a giant ice cream dispensing owl? Not only did this edifice resemble an enormous nocturnal predator, but the “head” also spun around a complete 360 degrees and its “eyes” glowed in the dark.
