Hardy sugar cane (Saccharum arundinaceum)
Flowers Panicl, High Teen
Saccharum arundinaceum (hardy sugar cane) - sun/ls, moist soil, 10-15'x10-15'; blooms oct-nov, z6-11, turns brown w/ frost but won't die until high teens.
Saccharum arundinaceum. This Hardy Sugar Cane will perform well down to zone 6! The handsome gray-green foliage resists lodging (never faltered even when hurricane winds blew through!) and provides a wonderful tropical feel and vertical accent to the garden. The effect is heightened in fall when flower panicles are produced on densely packed stalks and tower to as much as 15'. The plumes begin as soft pink, open to silver, and look great through the winter.

“A border flower of the highest merit,” is how British horticulturist, William Robinson once described this awe-inspiring Centaurea, and we couldn’t agree more! Crowning long straight green stems, the fluffy thistle-style heads in unique pale citron yellows and tissue-thin buff-colored bracts will attract more than a few admirers
Centaurea ruthenica, knapweed. Grows 3-4' high with pale yellow, fuzzy flowers and ferny leaves. Sun and good drainage, zones 5-9. Plant with grasses.

One tropical-looking hardy plant I'm psyched to try this year is 'Mekong Giant' banana (Musa intinerans var. xishuangbannaensis 'Mekong Giant'). It's said to be hardy from zone 6 all the way to zone 11. More important, it's rumored grow to 15 feet tall in a single zone 6 growing season. In warmer zones? Up to 40 feet. by Plants Nouveau, LLC
