Little House on the Prairie, Read it as a child and it was an enchanting story. Read it as an adult and you realize how terrifying it was for the adults: how close to starvation and death they were.

A memoir that reads like a novel, the author weaves so much humor into what would otherwise be a dismal tale, that this book is just fabulous.
