Dress, Evening Callot Soeurs (French, active 1895–1937) Designer: Madame Marie Gerber (French) Date: 1914 Culture: French Medium: silk, metal

Evening dress, Jacques Doucet, circa 1910. Silk satin and chiffon, beads, faux pearls, and rhinestones. “Pouter pigeon” bodice creating “S” shape. Via Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum, Tokyo.

This ball gown (ca. 1898-1900 by Jacques Doucet) is simplistic in design, yet extravagant by the choice of materials used. The sheer overlayer is enhanced by the solid lamé underlayers and a sense of luxury is added by the hidden lace flounce at the hem. Undoubtedly, a woman would make an entrance in this dress, as it is extremely seductive with its form fitting silhouette and low décolleté.
