Franconia Sculpture Park -- Franconia, MN -- Most people in the Twin Cities have posed next to the Spoonbridge and Cherry, but even more outrageous sculptures lie 45 minutes northeast of the Cities in Franconia. The Franconia Sculpture Park boasts a rotating collection of 75 sculptures that encourage visitors to interact with the oversized art.

Lake O' the Dalles Trail -- 1.0 mile round trip -- Known as a wildlife viewing trail, with black bear, deer, fox, eagles and osprey. Circles the 23-acre Lake O' the Dalles. 40 yards of the trail follows the park road where a bridge crosses Dalles Creek. The trail is unsurfaced with stone stairs. Map:

River Bluff Trail -- St. Croix Falls, 0.7 mile loop -- With the lower portion of the Dalles of the St. Croix River gorge on one side and Lake O' The Dalles on the other, this trail offers delightful scenes at every turn. Vegetation on the rocky gorge is relatively sparse, with ferns, mosses and lichens prominent, along with cedar, pine, oak and basswood trees.

Esker Trail -- St. Croix Falls -- Offers the best view of the St. Croix River. Park at the underpass of highway 35 and highway 8 and walk up the steep hill to view the river. Trip takes 20 minute.

St. Croix Falls trail maps -- Indeed, the small border cities of St. Croix Falls and Taylors Falls have over 30 miles of meandering trails, developed and maintained by various groups. You will need more than one weekend to explore all the trails that are here for the taking. Every season is a new adventure in the City of Trails!

Indianhead Flowage Trail -- St. Croix Falls, 1 mile -- Handicap-accessible trail hangs fairly close to the St. Croix River most of its length. Crosses several bridged streams as it winds through woods and wetlands. Includes an area a Scenic Riverway biologist described as "a northern tropical forest because of its lushness." Trilliums, marsh marigolds, blue flag iris, wild geraniums and other wildflowers. Start from the parking area one-tenth of a mile north of Lions Park.

Ridge View Trail -- 3 miles, 2 loops -- A rapids-strewn stream sings in full voice from the bottom of a canyon. Chisago loop traverses basalt rock outcroppings; Osceola loop is more level as you hike through pine and deciduous woods. Vistas of St. Croix backwaters are visible from the bluff side of the trail. Great place to see scarlet tanagers, eagles, turkeys, grouse. Take Hwy. 8 to Hwy 35 south. One mile later, follow County Road S to parking area. Nat'l Park map:

Glenna Farms -- Amery, WI, 1333 120th St. -- 80 acre maple syrup operation. Tour the farm and enjoy free samples. Retail store sells maple syrup, cheese, honey, and several specialty foods. Pumpkin patch in fall and MapleFest in March.

Willow River State Park draws more than 300,000 visitors each year.

Wissahickon Farms Country Inn -- Your own private Weekend Getaway, great for honeymoons, anniversaries or just escaping into your own private world. Tucked into the woods surrounded by 30 acres outside St. Croix Falls is a one-room Rustic Cabin the Ingalls family would have loved on the prairie. Built as a replica of an old country store, it was moved to the site by its current owners who updated it as the Wissahickon Farms Country Inn.

Centennial Bedrock Glade

FAWN-DOE-ROSA -- St. Croix Falls, WI -- Along the wooded path you will meet deer, elk, ducks, geese, a grizzly bear, mountain lion and other forest animals. Introduce kids to pigs, cows, goats, deer, donkeys, and llamas by visiting one of the area's petting farms. See and touch farm friends that are feathered or furry, and learn about life on the farm. Springtime tours feature more baby animals.

Osceola Bedrock Glades State Natural Area -- Osceola, WI -- Osceola Bedrock Glades is a large complex of rocky basalt bedrock exposures and one of only four well developed acid bedrock glades in Wisconsin. The site has a very distinctive glade flora and is exceptionally rich in ferns, mosses, and fungi. Bedrock glades are sparsely vegetated communities that develop on exposed relatively flat bedrock.

Osceola & St. Croix Valley Railway -- Osceola, WI -- This is a beautiful ride in the fall if you take the trip from Osceola to Marine on St. Croix. A shorter trip goes between Osceola and Dresser. The hosts are wonderful and are all volunteer led. It's a great scenic little trip through woods, water areas and more. The ride is filled with variety as you can get up and move about and explore the train.

Cascade Falls -- Osceola, WI -- This pretty waterfall is located along Route 35 in the middle of the village of Osceola along the St. Croix River. It is easy to visit, and close to many other scenic sights. Definitely worth a visit.
