In 1885, Van Gogh painted his first major work The Potato Eaters. His palette at the time consisted mainly of somber earth tones and showed no sign of the vivid coloration that distinguished his later work.

Vincent Van Gogh daguerrotype by Victor Morin (an assertion which several experts agree on. Or is he a doppelganger/look-a-like?)

The Van Gogh photograph, 4 ½ x 6 ½” has been authenticated as being taken between the years of 1885 and 1890 based on the thickness of the cabinet card as well as the materials that were used from that period. One of the first experiments was to take a self-portrait sketch of Van Gogh (Paris, summer 1887, lead pencil and India Ink on paper, 31.6 x 24.1 cm, Amsterdam) and overlay the drawing with the photograph. The two were a close match.

Vincent van Gogh, (Dutch, 1853–1890). The Flowering Orchard, 1888. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ittleson Jr. Purchase Fund, 1956 (56.13) | This is one of a series of fourteen blossoming orchard paintings. That it includes a scythe and rake makes it one of only two orchards that allude to human presence or labor. The motif and Van Gogh's stylized treatment are related to Japanese prints #spring

Le Moulin de al Galette, 1886. Vincent van Gogh....what can I say? It's the Dutch in me! As my dad always said, "Everything good in the world is Dutch!" (please note eye rolls as I type this)

Van Gogh 1889."Cypresses" was painted in late June 1889, shortly after Van Gogh began his yearlong voluntary stay as a patient in the asylum in Saint-Rémy. The subject, which he found "as beautiful of line and proportion as an Egyptian obelisk," both captivated and challenged the artist: "It is a splash of black in a sunny landscape, but it is one of the most interesting black notes, and the most difficult to hit off exactly that I can imagine."
