Around 1391, Nanjing, China, overtook Hangzhou, China, as the World's largest city, with a population of 473,000. Nanjing had first become a capital city for the Wu Kingdom in 229. During the Southern & Northern Dynasties period, when China was ravaged by civil war, Nanjing expanded its commercial contacts throughout the rest of east Asia. It suffered destruction when the Sui Dynasty reunited China, but was rebuilt under the Tangs & became the capital of the Mings.
