This Confederate prison during the Civil War had a reputation for its cruelty and inhumanity. These tombstones are a reminder of a horrible Era of American history.

The Sunken Road at Antietam. 5600 American soldiers died in the Sunken Road, 3000 Union and 2600 Confederate, in a space of less than 900 yards. At Antietam, 23,000 American soldiers died in a single day. This is still the record for the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. The battle began September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Though the North had twice as many troops as the South, they were able fight only to a draw.
