Dexter Gordon- Herman Leonard: “It was early 1948 at the Royal Roost in New York. An afternoon rehearsal gave me a unique opportunity to photograph many giants of jazz with my trusty 4×5 Speed Graphic. What a great career! To do what you love and be entertained at the same time!”

Miles Davis (right) plays his trumpet beside a promising talent he'd recruited for his sextet in 1955, a man who'd go on to become a jazz giant in his own right: tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. Not long before this photo was taken, Coltrane had rejoined Davis' group after a sojourn away with Thelonious Monk.

Miles Davis beside a promising talent he'd recruited for his sextet in 1955, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. Not long before this photo was taken, Coltrane had rejoined Davis' group after a sojourn away with Thelonious Monk. Both had overcome heroin addictions that nearly derailed their careers. According to Davis' biographer Ian Carr, Davis temporarily kicking Trane out of his group in 1957 prompted the saxophonist to quit junk cold turkey. Robert W. Kelley
John Coltrane and Miles Davis The trumpeter and the saxophonist complemented each other perfectly precisely because they were completely different from one another. Davis, in his life, was extroverted, intense, even violent. In his playing, though, he was cool, humble, reticent. Coltrane, in his life, was cool, humble, and reticent, while his playing was extroverted, intense, and violent, or, to use a favourite word of Coltrane critics during the late 1950s, “angry.”
