Kids are so lazy these days. Ridiculously young coal miner, USA, early 1900s | history | child labour | pipe | childhood lost
8 year old Coal Miner.. unfortunately, there were no child labor laws. It seems if you were able to walk, you were able to work.
The REAL Hunger Games. >> 8 year old Coal Miner <<< Shows just how lovely "the Capitol" is to District 12. Kids go to school until they're 16/17 in that book, mostly "learning about coal mining"! Shows readers don't care about realistic details if you entertain them enough! Something I need to remember when I'm being all perfectionist realist!

8 year old Coal Miner// It must have been nice to have kids that weren't freeloaders. Hey son, lets go have a drink after my nap. You're buyin.
8 year old coal miner, USA, early 1900’s.Children were cheap labor in the mines. He cleaned and played the part of a canary (kids were easier to replace than good miners). Probably Finnish or Swedish & indentured to the company for paying his father's debts to the company store.
Eight year old coal miner, USA, early 1900’s.Someone just made up the caption -- this is almost certainly just a little boy dressed up in a costume. 1. Child laborers didn't have families who could afford a studio portrait (and if they did, it would have been in his good clothes 2. Child mine workers didn't use picks, they did scut work. (This kid couldn't even have lifted that pick.)
Miner Boy: I put this picture under Just History, some say it a photo of a kid made up some say it is a minor boy! You decide I really don't care! Children were cheap labor in the mines. This boy spent 10 hours a day in that outfit with only the light from that tallow wick lamp. He cleaned & played the part of a "canary" (kids were easier to replace than good miners). He was probably Finnish or Swedish & indentured to the company for the purpose of paying his fathers debts. The unions fought bloody battles to get these children out of the coal mines. This little guy worked (& likely died) in Utah or Colorado mines / Scott Cooper

(Bonnie Clyde) - Bonnie Elizabeth Parker (October 1, 1910 – May 23, 1934) and Clyde Chestnut Barrow (March 24, 1909 – May 23, 1934) were well-known outlaws, robbers, and criminals who traveled the Central United States with their gang during the Great Depression.
Bonnie Parker. She did have that kind of "bad girl" thing going on, especially for the early 1930's. Many people do not realize that, not only did Bonnie never kill anybody, she never even fired a gun during any of their crimes.
Bonnie Parker - During the height of the Great Depression, she and Clyde robbed banks and store owners in a rural America ravaged by farm foreclosures and bankruptcies. At the time of their death, their gang was also believed responsible for murders, kidnappings, abductions, and woundings. Rowena, TX MESSED WITH TEXAS!! :/
Infamous: Half of the notorious Bonnie and Clyde, Bonnie Parker became one of America's most famous outlaws. She and partner Clyde Barrow robbed banks and small businesses, leaving a bloody train of murder victims in their wake.
Bonnie Parker, of Bonnie and Clyde. It is not well-known that at the time of her death, Bonnie was married ... to another man, named Roy Thornton. She had a tattoo on her knee with intertwined hearts and their (Roy and Bonnie) names. In fact, when she was killed, she was still wearing the wedding ring,
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker of the well known Bonnie and Clyde was born in Rowena, Texas. Clyde was born in Telico - just outside Dallas. She and Clyde were notorious outlaws who traveled with their gang across the US during the depression years.

Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on their two-year crime spree (1932-1934). The general attitude in the country was against government and Bonnie and Clyde used that to their advantage.

Olive Oatman was 13 when she traveled with her family to California by wagon. Attacked by Indians who killed all of the family but Olive, her Sister (who later died of starvation) and her Brother (who escaped). Sold to the Mojave tribe as a slave, she was tattooed and taken in as "one of their own". She was rescued 5 yrs later. She married John Fairchild in 1860, moved to Sherman TX where she died in 1903 and was buried in West Hill Cemetery on Lamar St. in Sherman.

Olive Oatman, first tattooed white woman in the U.S. She received her tattoos after being abducted by Indians. There is a woman on the TV show Hell On Wheels that has this same tattoo. I'm not sure the character is based on the woman.
