... giraffe sweater knittted by two Japanese women - designed for a 4-metre tall giraffe -[It] took 2 months to knit. [someone else's caption, excerpted & modified]
Knitting a sweater and giving it to a friend or family member is a traditional expression of affection. Mai Yamashita and Naoto Kobayashi knitted this enormous one to fit a full grown giraffe in a zoo. Still, "they knew that the giraffe would never accept the sweater or wear it." How sad. skull <3 flowers - a pressed flower skeleton bucks the trend in advertising for funeral services in Japan by celebrating life.
Stunning! Nishinihon Tenrei, a Japanese funeral home, wanted to create an unconventional ad for funeral services, so they approached Tokyo-based ad agency I BBDO. Creative director Mari Nishimura decided to create a real-size human skeleton made from pressed flowers.
Poster illustration for funeral services. You could lay the flowers in this design. Maybe down the aisle.

Floral skeleton. Ad for the Nishinihon Tenrei funeral service in Japan, created by Japanese ad agency I&S BBDO. The ad features lifesize skeleton made of pressed flowers.
A pressed flower skeleton bucks the trend in advertising for funeral services in Japan by celebrating life. To me, it looks similar to the Dia de los Muertos skulls, beautiful instead of chilling.
Life-size Human Skeleton Made of Flowers ::: The March 11th earthquake and tsunami had a traumatic effect on Japan. Issues of life and death, hope and despair, beauty and tragedy became an all too real part of people’s everyday lives. So when Tokyo-based ad agency was approached to create an unconventional ad for funeral services, it understandably posed several challenges... (Art Education - graphic design, advertising, visual communication, skeleton/figure)
In the terrifying wake of 2011 the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, funerals become a commonplace ordeal as the nation dealt with unprecedented loss. Like most cultures, Japanese funerals are somber affairs punctuated with black and white with any deviation considered taboo or inappropriate. Reflecting on the enormity of recent events, funeral home Nishinihon Tenrei approached Tokyo-based ad agency I&S BBDO to create an ad for a trade show that would buck the trend of muted colors so prevalent in the industry. The agency responded with this unprecedented figure of a skeleton made with pressed flowers that overtly celebrates the cycle of life by introducing color and elements of nature that are often avoided in such services. The image was considered so successful it went on to win a design merit award from the 2013 One Club Awards.

Another one...Rosary of skulls and faces: Early 16th century German rosary from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection is a fabulous bit of memento mori, with callow, living mortals on one side of each bead and grinning death's heads on the other: Each bead of the rosary represents the bust of a well-fed burgher or maiden on one side, & skeleton on the other. Such images served as reminders that life is fleeting & that leading a virtuous life as a faithful Christian is key to salvation.
