(aka: Ledebouria petiolata) This delightful clone of African false hosta is from our 2002 expedition to Thailand, when Wade Roitsch of Yucca Do Nursery picked this up at the Chatuchak plant market. Wade noticed that the leaves were larger than the commonly grown form and the foliar patterning held up better in the summer heat. For us, Drimiopsis maculata 'Slow Fade' makes a winter deciduous basal rosette of fleshy green foliage, highlighted with dark purple flecks. In early May (NC), the clumps are topped with 6" spikes of tiny white buds that open as grey-green flowers. Drimiopsis maculata is native to stream banks and forest floors in South Africa, but we grow it in our full sun rock garden with cactus and agaves...please don't report us.
