Flamingo Tongue Shell
The leopard spots of this Flamingo Tongue Shell are actually on a fleshy mantle which the snail can retract inside the shell when alarmed. This lighting and pose was the result of several years' study of this subject. Having caught what I thought the ultimate image, I have never shot it again. This was circa 1988. A wonderful challenge for any photographer is to shoot a common, iconic subject in a way that stands out from all of the others.
