BATTLESHIP SPELLING PRACTICE~ A 2-player game where each student inserts the word list in to spaces going across. Players take turns guessing coordinates. If they miss, they mark it on their board. If they hit a letter, they keep guessing until they miss. If they sink a word, the player marks it off of his list. The goal of the game is to sink all of your opponent's words. Fun and great practice!
I do not believe that giving students a list of words and telling them to memorize it for a test is super effective. I think this spelling activity would encourage students to make relationship to the words, while reinforcing some vocabulary as well.
Spelling Battleship - This is a two player game. Before playing each student needs to fill in one side of the game board with six of their spelling words going across (one letter per box). The first player needs to guess a coordinate and the other student has to tell them if they hit a letter. Battleship play continues until the first player sinks all the other's words!
By keeping a supply of laminated paint samples, students can easily practice writing and reading compound words they come across in print. This makes for effective vocabulary activities to keep at the writing center!
