Known for his mastery of cutting and his highly structured aesthetic, his gowns were considered works of art, and he is best known for his sculpted ball gowns made from lavish fabrics, as well as his often fur or embroidery trimmed coats and capes. He became close friends with Evelyn Waugh and Cecil Beaton...his first shop, started in Chicago in 1926 at the age of nineteen, was a hat shop in which he used a friend's name...that of Charle's Boucherdon.
