Allen Ginsberg letter to The Paris Review, June, 1966 re LSD, Psylocibin [sic], etc. To readers of Paris Review: Between occasion of interview with Thomas Clark June ’65 and publication May ’66 more reassurance came. I tried small doses of LSD twice in secluded tree and ocean cliff haven at Big Sur. No monster vibration, no snake universe hallucinations. Many tiny jeweled violet flowers along the path of a living brook that looked like Blake’s illustration for a canal in grassy Eden: huge Pacific watery shore, Orlovsky dancing naked like Shiva long-haired before giant green waves, titanic cliffs that Wordsworth mentioned in his own Sublime, great yellow sun veiled with mist hanging over the planet’s oceanic horizon. No harm. President Johnson that day went into the Valley of Shadow operating room because of his gall bladder & Berkley’s Vietnam Day Committee was preparing anxious manifestoes for our march toward Oakland police and Hell’s Angels. Realizing that more vile words from me would send out physical vibrations into the atmosphere that might curse poor Johnson’s flesh and further unbalance his soul, I knelt on the sand surrounded by masses of green bulb-headed Kelp vegetable-snake undersea beings washed up by last night’s tempest, and prayed for the President’s tranquil health. Since there has been so much legislative mis-comprehension of the LSD boon I regret that my unedited ambivalence in Thomas Clark’s tape transcript interview was published wanting this footnote. Your obedient servant [signed] Allen Ginsberg, aetat 40

To doodler Katy Wu, Langston Hughes’ poem is a message of equality and hope. “This poem has a hopeful message and I like that. It comes from a time where there was a lot of work to be done for civil rights,” says Katy. That’s a sentiment Hughes also shared when writing his poem, which first originated as a lyric in the the opera Troubled Island by William Grant Still. As Hughes experienced and witnessed the

You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd.” Flannery O’Connor. "As Joyce Carol Oates once said, O'Connor had less in common with Faulkner than with Kafka and Kierkegaard. She created works of moral fiction that, according to Oates, 'were not refined New Yorker stories of the era in which nothing happens except inside the characters’ minds, but stories in which something happens of irreversible magnitude, often death by violent means.'” (click thru to link to her reading. rw)

“The Catholic writer, in so far as he has the mind of the Church, will feel life from the standpoint of the central Christian mystery; that it has, for all its horror, been found by God to be worth dying for.” (Flannery O’Connor, The Church and the Fiction Writer)
“Whenever I’m asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize one.” ― Flannery O'Connor
Flannery O'Connor - great Catholic writer. "The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it."
The Church and The Fiction Writer: "The Catholic fiction writer, as fiction writer, will look for the will of God first in the laws and limitations of his art and will hope that if be obeys those, other blessings will be added to his work."

Novelist Caleb Pirtle III wonders if Flannery O'Connor write realism, or was it merely grotesque? She was the enfant terrible of Southern Writers.
Flannery O'Connor | She was born on March 25, 1925, in Savannah, Georgia. O'Connor was the first fiction writer born in the twentieth century to have her works collected and published by the Library of America. She never married, relying for companionship on her correspondence and close relationship with her mother. She suffered with Lupus and died at the age of 39, on August 3, 1964.
