10 Children’s Books About Math
I think my goal for next year will be trying to integrate the teaching of measurement all year long instead of just during the measurement chapter in our math book. In the past one way I have tried to sneak in measuring throughout the year is by connecting it to seasonal themes. For example, during October we always take a field trip to the pumpkin patch. We then learn how to estimate and measure how tall our pumpkins are with unifix cubes and a ruler, measure the circumference of the pumpkin with a piece of string, and even weigh the pumpkins on the nurse's scale! The kids love our pumpkin math! I also have used candy hearts on Valentine's Day and jellybeans in the spring to let the kids do some measuring with nonstandard units. I have found that kindergarteners love learning measurement through lots of open exploration. One of the activities that my students always enjoy doing is using all sorts of measuring cups and tools to scoop and measure things in our discovery table (sand, water, beans, etc.). Comparing weights using a balance is also usually a very popular activitykids love to get their hands on that balance! I also always let the kids have fun measuring anything they want to in our room with just about any measuring tool they want (unifix cubes, links, rulers, etc.). Just add a recording sheet to any of these activities and they would make a great measurement work station. There are also lots of great children's books you can use to teach about measurement. One good book to introduce measuring length in standard and nonstandard units is Measuring Penny by Loreen Leedy; it's about a little girl and her dog who go around measuring lots of things in their world. Another good book to introduce measuring is How Big Is a Foot? by Rolf Myller. A great book to teach about telling time to the hour is The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. At my school, kindergarteners are expected to learn how to tell time to the hour. Here is a game I made for my students to play after reading The Grouchy Ladybug. Students take turns spinning a time on the spinner and then covering up the corresponding clock on their game board with a ladybug counter. Click here to download What Time Is It? Another game I made for my students to learn about telling time to the hour is: Pick a Time. I used a package of foam shapes I got from the dollar spot at Target to make the game pieces (but you could also use small pieces of paper or other manipulatives). I wrote different times on the foam shapes, and students take turns pulling a shape out of the bag and reading the time on it. Students can then cover up the corresponding clock on their game board with the game piece. Click here to download a copy of this game. I hope you got some fun new ideas for measurement activities you can add to your math work stations. For some more great ideas, head over to Lory's page since she is hosting this chapter of the math work stations linky party.

Math Coachs Corner: Measurement Misconceptions. One of the big misconceptions when kiddos measure with a ruler is what is called tick counting. What that means is that instead of counting the units between the ticks on the ruler, kids count the tick marks instead. 'Broken rulers' are a great way to assess if students really understand how to correctly use a ruler.

We have finally finished conferences. YAY! I always love this time of year, meeting parents, setting goals, and a fresh start to a new quarter, but it is definitely a relief to have the first round of conferences over. I wanted to share an awesome freebie with you that I found several years ago. I use it with fifth graders, and just adjust it to meet their needs, even though it says to use it with 68th grade. Even more with the common core standards, I think this would be applicable to use with 5th graders to stretch their thinking and give them tools to use for deeper understanding. I've used it several times with a lot of success and a lot of "aha" moments. The activity is called Picking Pythagoras, and it's a unit looking at angles and triangles and looking at different angles and lengths of sides used to make triangles. It's a handson activity and very engaging. The directions for the lesson are here, and the materials that I used for my lesson are here. I used the strips and the Exploring Triangles activity. The others were too advanced for my students. Basically, students cut out their strips of paper, and explore which strips go together to make triangles, and thus look at the different requirements of a triangle. They examine the length of the strips as well as the angles and look for patterns between which combinations of angles and lengths will make a triangle. The website above does a great job of explaining the activity. (These pictures are actually a bit older, from when I was student teaching and found this activity!) YES! It makes a triangle. Oh no! No triangle. Hard at work Another incredibly engaging geometry activity I have done with students is to use Wikki Stix to make pictures. Then, students can find the perimeter and angles in the picture. (Sometimes I will tell them that they have to have a certain number of each type of angle). I have even had the kids do this on top of grid paper and find the area of their shape. I apologize for the low quality picture! This gives you an idea of what the pictures look like. Using the Wikki Stix to create their shapes, then measure and label. I hope you all have a happy, relaxing weekend! My family will be spending it at the Pumpkin Patch for the very first time. Please Note: I am in no way affiliated with any of the websites linked to above, nor have I been compensated for mentioning them in this post. They are simply tried and true activities and resources used in my own classroom.

I have done this area and perimeter name activity for my math classes. #perimeter #area #geometry
This activity using an area and perimeter names may be aligned with the Common Core Measurement & Data strand, 4.MD.3. Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For instance, students may be given the real world task of designing a tshirt with their name displayed in block letters. Students must calculate the area & perimeter to determine the amount of fabric needed for the block letters.
