A rock formation in Morrill County in western Neb., Chimney Rock rises nearly 300 feet above the surrounding North Platte River valley. During the middle century it served as a landmark along the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, and the Mormon Trail.
On our way to Fort Kearny we were stopped by a heard of buffalo blocking our path. We were stopped for one day before the buffalo moved. We could not shoot them because they would have ran in all directions and we would have been trampled. To pass the time we were waiting we had a big feast.
