Making The Most of Your Classroom Walls: Maximizing your bulletin boards (and other wall space) Word walls
I love the visual math wall. We're focusing on academic vocabulary this year, but this is a great way to make sure kids remember what the words mean.
This site was great! It showed you so many different ways to decorate your classroom. It had ideas for reading, writing, science, and math walls. It was so helpful because how you choose to design and organize your classroom can greatly affect your students learning enviroment.
I believe this is a great way to structure the classroom environment and to impact students learning because it allows students to become aware of what they are learning. Students will have the opportunity to visually see what math looks like everyday they enter the classroom by simply looking at the math wall. Using this idea will also have students become aware of math vocabulary and the strategies used in math.
20. Idea twenty Definitely want a math wall in my classroom; this one is colorful, exciting, and welcoming! It can offer the practice of many skills. It will serve the purpose similar that of a Word Wall. This will be something the students may use as a resource to provide questions they are unsure about. As shown in the picture, it will also have things that I will display as well that i want my students to pay special attention to.

How is it already Friday? This summer is going by way too fast for my liking! I wish I could just pull the reigns and tell it to SLOW DOWN! Since it's Friday, it means that today is the last day of Christmas in July! In case you are just joining us, here's what's been going on. Every day a different series of products have been on sale for 24 hours only! Today we are looking at Math Word Walls! This past year, I struggled to find a Word Wall System that worked for me! I was tired of trying to have all of our content words mixed with the highfrequency words that we were learning. So.... I tore my word wall and started over! My old word wall cards were adorable! They used really cute clip art and fun fonts. However, I came to the realization that I only had them up because I liked them {insert gasp and dreaded feeling of being a horrible teacher!} To a student, these cards were probably very distracting and were not helping them learn and remember vocabulary. It was time for a math wall renovation! I started working on new math word wall cards with my students in mind. I teach in an inclusion classroom with a high population of ELLs, so I really wanted to make the vocabulary as accessible as possible. This is where the idea for visual math word wall cards came into play. Here is what my math word wall looked like after the makeover! I have been bouncing around the primary grades lately (last year I was in third, the year before I was in first, and next year I will be in second). Knowing that I will likely continue to move around for the next few years, I made a set of Visual Math Word Wall Cards for grades 13. I will be expanding this set in the near future, so don't worry if you don't fall in this range! Today only, my Visual Math Word Wall Cards are on sale over at my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Click on the image below to pick them up for yourself! Thank you for joining me for Christmas in July! I hope you've snagged some new ideas and hopefully a few good deals too!

Here's a series of 78 cards for math word walls in K, 1 and 2. The vocabulary words come directly from the Common Core Standards.
This Math Word wall is designed for use in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade classrooms. There are 78 cards containing vocabulary from the common core. Each card is illustrated in a way to help your students recall the meaning of the word. Words can be added to an ABC word wall, but will probably be more beneficial to your students displayed in sets of associated words. Words could also be used for small group instruction.

Vocabulary is a key part to math. In the past, I always had my students designate one section of their notebook as their "Math Dictionary". For each unit, they would write the vocabulary words, their definitions, and give examples and nonexamples of each. Some kids would "forget" to include the examples or nonexamples though. Since I'm switching to interactive notebooks, I decided to update my Math Dictionary section. I found a great template of the Frayer Model for vocabulary. It's great because it goes along with foldable theme. The template has an oval in the center to write the vocabulary word. In the top left box, students write the definition. In the top left box, they write any key facts of characteristics about the word (which I love). The bottom left box is for examples and the bottom right one is for nonexamples. Now, there's a spot for all the components, making it virtually impossible for students to "forget" to include anything. In order to keep my students organized (and to make the vocab section like a "real" dictionary), I made an alphabetized list of all the vocab words we will be going over during the year. It took some time, but it was well worth it. I am going to have the students paste the list onto the first page of their vocabulary sections on the first day of school. You can get the list from my TeachersPayTeachers store. As for the individual words, I am going to have the students cut out each rectangle. If they fold the rectangle in half, they can easily glue four words per page. They will write the word on the folded side of the paper for quick reference. They words will be colorcoded by unit (just like the Table of Contents). During the first few days of school, when I am busy handing out books and collecting a ton of forms, I will have my classes start cutting, folding, and gluing the blank templates into their Math Dictionaries. I will also have them assign a color of choice to each unit and have them write just the words on the folded side. They will fill in each template as we get to each unit. Filling out the models for each word will also be a great assignment to leave with a sub when I'm absent. I think this system is going to work well!

Linking with 4mula Fun to share about Interactive Math Notebooks. This is her monthly link party for all things interactive notebook. All subjects! Today, I have decided to share about how I have done vocabulary in my notebook. First, for no particular reason, I use the back of my notebook for vocabulary. This is how it looked in my composition notebooks. This is how we kept track of it in the table of contents. This coming school year, I am using binders for my math notebooks. I plan to have the back still be for vocabulary. Our last divider will be for vocabulary. I have done many different types of vocabulary. This is the Frayer model. This was one I used in summer school this summer. These were bigger than I have used in class, but same method. I have also just had students write them out. This was just one variation. This was a vocabulary wheel we made this past year. On the right is a vocabulary wheel without the cover. On the left, we made a pocket to keep vocabulary note cards.I pinned them here. I have cut up card stock, students write the word on one side, definition on the other. The right side was flaps we made one day. I saw the left side on Runde's Room. My kids love using the gold brads for some reason. The right side is a shutter fold we made for types of graphs. We made this one when studying circles. Another of my favorites because it was different than just writing definitions out. I am sure I found that on Pinterest too. Then, this summer I found this. How awesome is this??!!!! I absolutely LOVE it. This is from Mrs. Hester's Blog, she has great posts about interactive notebooks. Definitely check her out and prepared to fall in love! How you use vocabulary in your class, doesn't really matter. But, using it is the key. I teach many ESL students and this is critical to their learning. Having these words in their math notebooks makes it easy for me to direct them to use it as we are working. All of these words are posted in my room on the word wall or anchor charts, but for students to have these at their fingertips daily helped a great deal. So now, I am forced with deciding to make a glossary type dictionary or by units with various methods. I could still do foldables for each unit. But, I really don't have time in my day to do both. Just not sure what to do. I would love to hear your opinions.

I've been working on interactive notebooks with my students over the last few semesters. In thinking about how they might be used in the classroom, we spend quite a bit of time talking about strategies for vocabulary. I thought it might be fun to create some strip booklets for students to use in math or science, either over the course of the year or for each major unit of instruction. Each booklet includes pages identified by letter of the alphabet. Most letters are given a single page, but the pages for Q/R, U/V, W/X, and Y/Z are shared. On each page there is a space for the word, a picture, and definition. Here's what they look like. Download Science Vocabulary Booklets. Download Math Vocabulary Booklets.
