William Morris Tapestry: The Hare William Morris started designing wallpapers in the early 1860′s. Though naturally-inspired patterns have always been found in fabric & wallpaper design, William Morris introduced a new version of naturalistic patterns. Some of his designs were inspired, or copied, from historic designs he found in the Victoria and Albert Museum. But mostly, Morris designed from nature, using as a basis the plants and flowers found in his own gardens or in nearby woods and fields

Fabric design for a sofa seat by William Morris and his apprentice and successor Henry Dearle.
Beth Russell's William Morris Tapestry Kits: These two tapestry kits are based on an unusual design for a sofa seat attributed to William Morris and his apprentice and successor Henry Dearle. A watercolour of the design (1880-1890) is at the William Morris Gallery. A panel was woven in about 1910 by Morris & Co after the death of Morris and while Dearle was running the company.

Girl Reading (1853). William Morris Hunt (1824–1879). Hunt studied with Jean-François Millet. “Girl Reading,” a quiet image of a girl seated in a dark interior with a book, inspired by Millet’s paintings of young French peasant women. In Hunt’s painting, the warm light, soft paint handling, and delicate, subdued colors similarly indicate the artist’s affection for his subject. She is clearly middle class. Hunt has transported Millet’s scene from a peasant’s humble cottage to an American parlor.
