Kentucky Fried Chicken Bucket - when I was a kid it was not KFC, they spelled the name out (it was a big deal when we got fast food, especially a big family sized meal)
Kentucky Fried Chicken. I never went to KFC until 1969. There was no fast-food restaurants in our small town.
Kentucky Fried Chicken Bucket - when I was a kid it was not KFC, they spelled the name out. Going to the beach food.
... for years people believed Kentucky Fried Chicken changed its name to ' KFC' because they didnt want to remind customers they were making a worrisome dietary choice.

Today's an anniversary of sorts: The Supreme Soviet voted itself out of existence on Dec. 26, 1991. A writer from my hometown (St. Paul, represent!) writes about how she misses hating the USSR. It's weird to say you miss hating anyone, especially if you grew up in the 80s with a horrendous fear that the Soviets would nuke us, but as opposed to rogue terrorists with dirty bombs, they seem like such a civilized enemy by comparison. It's weird to think the USSR fell more than 20 years ago. Sometimes I think they're still there. In high school, we had one year devoted to world history. We all had to take Western Europe, and then your choices were The Americas, East Asia, USSR and Eastern Europe, and Middle East and Africa. I chose East Asia and USSR, East Asia because it fascinated me, and USSR because there was a nagging sense that everyone should know about that place. Yet I also remember in 8th grade, our social studies teacher (who was also the principal) flat-out laughed at us one day. "You all think Russia is the enemy!" he said. "You can't even find our real threat on a map!" And he turned around and wrote IRAN on the board, and yes, no one could find it on a map. Any Soviet Union childhood memories for you?

Burger Chef was an American fast-food restaurant chain founded in 1954 in Indianapolis, IN. The chain expanded throughout the U.S. & at its peak in 1973, had 1,050 locations. The chain featured several signature items such as the Big Shef & Super Shef burgers. In 1982, the General Foods Corp, decided fast food was no longer in the company's outline, & soon the chain was gradually sold off to the owners of Hardee's. The final Burger Chef closed in 1996.

1955: THE McDONALD'S FRANCHISE. The McDonald’s business began in 1940 with a restaurant by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California. But the present corporation dates its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc in Des Plaines, Illinois, a small suburb of Chicago, on April 15th, 1955.

April 15th: Today in 1955, the first franchised McDonald's opened at Des Plaines, Illinois. Did you have a favorite "burger joint" as a child? Was it a national chain or local? Anyone remember White Castle? A&W? Carrol's?
Micky D's first location, San Bernadino CA., 1940. Had my first fast food burger at Micky D's in San Jose. We each got a burger and had to share french fries!!

Fast-Food Firsts: A History of America's Chain Restaurants, Doughnut Shops, and Convenience Stores
The chain's origins go back to the opening of a restaurant in 1940 by brothers Richard & Maurice McDonald in San Bernadino, CA; in 1948, they adopted the principles of the modern fast food restaurant put in place by the White Castle chain over two decades earlier. The present corporation dates its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois, on April 15, 1955, the 9th McDonald's restaurant overall.
McDonald's Opened:1940 San Bernadino, CA Dick and Mac McDonald started McDonald's as a drive-in barbecue restaurant. They scrapped that for a 9-item menu: hamburger, cheeseburger, three drinks, milk, coffee, potato chips, pie, French fries, and milkshakes. In 1952, they allowed Neil Fox to launch a carbon copy restaurant with the signature golden arches. On April 15, 1955, the first franchise opened in Des Plaines, IL, selling fries for 10 cents and burgers for 15 cents.

1950s McDonald's - 15 cents!! Dad took us after Church for lunch...just the beginning of "fast" food.
McDonalds and the Golden Arch! wow 15 cents! Back then my dad would say "let's go to the golden arches," not McDonalds! Their food was much better back then!
1950s McDonald's - 15 cents!! When I was about ten, I begged my mom and dad to stop at the McDonald's close to my aunt's house. They finally stopped one afternoon and I got my first McDonald's hamburger. Yuk - I hated the mustard, ketchup and onions mixed together but I ate it anyway because I knew they would never stop at another fast food place again if I didn't. I still don't like their hamburgers, but LOVE their diet Coke.
