Welcome to the first English-language website dedicated to Kyoto’s extraordinary Gion Festival, arguably Japan’s largest and most famous. It’s also among the oldest: it first took place in the year 869 C.E. - http://gionfestival.org/
"Historically, the Gion festival is an interesting coming together of essentially autonomous neighborhood associations, called chōnai. The chōnai are essential to everything about the festival; traditionally each chōnai funded its own hoko, and the rise and fall of the festival yamaboko mirrored the fluctuations in fortunes of chōnai members" - http://gionfestival.org/community/

Aogashima island, Japan. Found in the Philippine Sea but governed by Tokyo. Was once a much larger volcano which erupted and collapsed creating the caldera you see here. Inside the large crater is the beginnings of a new upwelling as magma forces itself upward causing the land to rise again like what is happening with Mt. St. Helen's.
