4th grade value study - tempera. looked at artwork of Robert Indiana - love stamps from 70's. brainstormed four letter words that describe something we would like everyone to have. Each student chose a word and drew it in block letters-similar composition to Indiana's love. mixed a number of different tints and shades to paint in our composition. The final step was to outline the dry painting with a black crayon. I found this lesson idea from Tricia Fuglestad @ drydenart.weebly.com

Students used 9 x 24" colored paper and three colors of tempera paint to make their backgrounds. We used mat board to spread the paint. They sprinkled the paint before "pulling" the paint, making sure not to mix all the colors together. The birch tree was made with the same mat board piece and black tempera. We stamped the sides on white paper, and then pulled the black paint horizontally to create the bark. Once dry, it was glued onto the background and branches were draw with black marker.
