George III needlework sampler, initialled MN, dated 1773 & unusually dated with 1 number of the year in ea. corner of main panel.

A George III Embroidery Sampler ~ Maria Spratt (1818-) ~ 19th century ~  silk threads on linen ground, with a short religious verse within a floral cartouche above a detailed depiction of a red bricked house within a rural scene with animals to the forground, trees and a church to the background and birds leading to a floral cartouche and basket, bearing the inscription 'Maria Spratt Born 18th August 1818'. The whole enclosed within a mixed floral training border.

The inscription reads: Lydia Stocker Age 13 1798 Happy is the Man that hath a friend Form'd by the God of Nature Well may he feel and recommend Friendship to his creator Embroidery covers the entire surface.

Sampler circa 1792. Patty Coggeshall is thought to have attended the Bristol school run by Anne Bowman Usher, which existed from 1774 to 1793. The samplers made at Mrs. Usher's school can be identified by their distinctive black background stitching, the figure of a musician playing a flute, and a long-tailed bird in flight.
