Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt; there are few books that are both heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny, too.

Set in Afghanistan immediately following WWII, Caravans led me through a very different culture than my own through the eyes of a young man at the embassy. Beautifully written by Michener, of course.

This one made me go back to the Old Testament and look up a few things... really good fiction that brings a new attention to forgotten things and gives a new voice to things I had overlooked.

Yes, it is a thick book. Yes, it is a classic. Yes, it requires patience to learn of the Russian culture and mores of the time. Yes, it is absolutely worth it.
