Mrs. T's First Grade Class: Subitizing game: uncover the colored square for 3 seconds if the partner guesses correctly they keep the square. The partner with the most squares wins! freebie beam website
From Mrs. T's Blog: "Here's a great idea for a subitizing game. Cover each square on the game board with a square. Have one partner lift up the square for three seconds while the other tries to guess what the number is. They put the square back after three seconds and then guess the number. If they are correct they get to keep the square. If they get it wrong they have to put the square back and it's the other persons turn. The one with the most squares at the end wins.

Math Coach's Corner: Roll and Cover for 10: Two Versions. Learning combinations for making 10 (ex., 3 + 7, 2 + 8, etc.) is a critical component for building number sense and developing fact fluency. With two versions of this game, students can practice on an abstract level or representational. Grab them for free!
This activity is form Math Coach Corner & it that works with ten frames. It comes with 4 free worksheets to download. To play the game, students 1.) Roll the # cube, 2) Put a maker on the # that goes with their # to make 10, 3.) Write the # sentence for the combination, 4.) Keep rolling until all the #'s are covered. According to Marzano’s research, this would be a nonlinguistic representation. Students have to match #'s with ten frames, & know the relationships of # pairs that =10.

Coin cards for practicing skip counting in a circle with students. Game is explained as the skip counting goes around the circle. Great idea to practice and keep it engaging from Math Coach's Corner: Making Connections
In a circle students will skip count ~ direction and free coin cards on the blog Math Coach's Corner: Making Connections
Math Coach's Corner: Making Connections. Show the nickel card and students go around the circle counting by 5s. At some point in the circle, switch the card to the penny card and then next student switches over to counting by 1s. I would recommend starting slowly with the coinsmaybe counting by 5s (nickels) and then switching to 1s (pennies)and gradually build up over time to switching from quarters to dimes to nickels and pennies.
Math Coachs Corner: Making Connections. Think about the skills required for both telling time and counting money. When you do either, you skip count by one number and then switch to skip counting by another. For example, when you count coins, you usually group the like coins and skip count by those numbers (skip count by 25 for the quarters, by 10s for the dimes, etc.). Check out this adaption of Count Around the Circle for counting coins.
