henrybreanlasvegasjournal Forgotten giant arrows across the US to guide mail pre WWII
Long before the days of radio (and those convenient little smartphone applications), the US Postal service began a cross-country air mail service, using WWI-surplus airplanes. In 1924, the federal government funded enormous concrete arrows to be built every 10 miles or so along established airmail routes to help the pilots trace their way across America.

A previously unknown version of Martin Waldseemüller’s famous world map has been disocvered in the collections of the University Library in Munich. On this map, the New World appears for the first time under the name “America”, chosen to honor the explorer Amerigo Vespucci (1451 – 1512), whom Waldseemüller erroneously regarded as the discoverer of the continent.

Martin Waldseemüller (ca. 1507), notable because it was the first with the name "America" on it. Dubbed, as a result, "America's birth certificate".

Historical marker No. 86 at Tule Springs at Floyd Lamb Park is one of those revised by the State Historic Preservation Office. The plaque still recognizes the archaeological site's mammal fossils from 14,000 years ago, but references to the presence of humans before 11,000 B.C. will be removed because that claim is unsupported.
