Happy Sunday! Hubby and I are off for a funfilled adventure day, exploring a new church, a downtown food festival, and a ferry ride across Puget Sound. We're taking advantage of this beautiful weather before the rains come :) Before we head out, I'm joining the lovely ladies, Amanda and Stacia, from Collaboration Cuties, for their MustRead Mentor Text linky: Today's theme is Math and I want to share a fun book I will use for introducing the concept of algebra to my students: Amazon description: From the MathStart series, this story begins with Grandpa taking his five grandchildren to the opening of Safari Park. Though each child starts out with 20 free tickets for rides, Paul promptly loses his. Grandpa decrees that each cousin must take Paul on a ride, which might take 2, 4, or 6 tickets. Other treats, such as food and games, cost 1 ticket. As they go through the day, intense mathematical calculations ensue as the kids figure out what they have spent, how much is left, and how they can spend it. The math is worked out visually on the pages, illustrated by lively, colorful inkandwash drawings. Younger children may enjoy this picture book as one of the few taking place at an amusement park; older students are more likely to take on the mathematical challenges presented. As Murphy notes in the two appended pages of complementary activities and suggested reading, this book offers experience in finding a missing element, "an important step in the development of algebraic thinking." As I begin this new school year, I am most nervous about teaching fifth grade math for the first time. Sometimes I feel like this: Anyone with me? :) As a student, I did well in math, but never enjoyed it as much as Reading or Social Studies. But I don't want my dislike of math to affect my kiddos. I have been praying for a passion and enthusiasm for math that would be contagious for my students :) I plan to off my year start by making math come alive to my students by giving them opportunities to see reallife applications to the math concepts we study. Here's some Pinspiration for making math applicable: 1. Math is Everywhere: Students took a walk around the school and took pictures of real life objects that represented a math vocabulary word 2. Reallife Math Problems 3. Numbers Important to Me: Have students decorate their math journals with numbers that are important to them How do you get your students interested in math?

Here is a picture dump! I'll try to compile a list of original resources that I borrowed from and then share what I can. But for now, a pictographic story of my interactive notebook for units 3 and 4. I have added a few, quick notes about particular times under the photos. The "Remember on my Retest" pages is a blank organizer that lists each objective on our test. Students fill out reminders to themselves about what to study as they make corrections to their original test. For more on retesting my classroom, see my post here. The large, block letters on the right side of the page were a coloring activity. Students colored it just like a coloring book in 8th grade. Yep... most of them loved it!! The picture below is the "from points/from a graph" foldable open. The cards on the right were a matching activity. Students worked to match a graph, table of values, equation, slope value, and yintercept value. They stapled their matches all together and taped them in. card sorting activity Desmos investigation. More info can be found here. Students wrote their names in block letters and identified the types of slope for each section of their names. The inside of the slope foldable is shown below. The above was a small matching activity. Some of the graphs and scenarios were lose and students had to match them to the ones already given. It really made them look at and examine axes. That's all for now!! :) UPDATE! Here are all the files. There are TONS since we did a lot of pages and a lot in class. I've included all the editable word/publisher files as well as the pdf version to preserve formatting and fonts. Use whatever you want!

This is a great book mark that shows all the properties of numbers and some valuable equations. It would be great for students at the abstract level with these concepts who just need a quick reminder. Simply print the book mark, cut it out, and hand out!
After students are able to master Algebra with their own activities, I would print them this Algebra Bookmark so, they can use the equations as a checking tool.

Tweet Hi all! I am so excited to show off my new blog design done by Ruby Slippers Blog Design. After just over a year of blogging, I was ready to get rid of the generic template and make my blog more personalized and fun! I have big plans to make my blog even better in the next few months and will be adding a lot to my other pages that you now see displayed at the top. To celebrate this big change, I want to highlight 10 of my most popular blog posts from the last year. If you haven't already, you might want to check them out! My MOST POPULAR Monday Math Literature was a recent one on learning to make circle graphs using the story Tiger Math. My new series on Teaching Math with You Tube Videos has also been immensely popular. The fan favorite so far has been the ones about Area and Perimeter. A topic very close to my heart is making sure kids know their combinations of 10 so I am thrilled with the response I have received to this post on using technology to practice combinations of 10. Here is a simple and quick way to increase numeracy in your students. A very popular but short and sweet post about making subitizing cards and double flap dot cards with your students. So easy to do! For teachers of students in grades 47, here is a must read post on using the area model to teach multiplication of mixed numbers. Here is my most popular post about math apps to use in the classroom. These two apps are still some of the most used apps on my iPad Place value and counting activities are so important in grades K2, here is a super popular post about all the ways I use place value decks in the primary classrooms I write about how I use formative assessment a lot on this blog but here is my most popular post on the basics of formative assessment. This post about Common Core standards for first and second grade fractions has been amazingly popular. I have some definite opinions based on research that I have read and my own experiences about teaching fractions. This will give you some things to think about! Posted EXACTLY one year ago today, my ideas for increasing additive reasoning using dice has been by far the most popular post on my blog. It currently has over 9,000 views! There are ideas for grades K6. Easy and low prep, a teacher favorite! What blog posts have been your favorite? Please respond in the comments below!
Tweet Have you started using the area model to teach multidigit multiplication? How about using it to teach fraction or mixed number multiplication? Here is an example of using the area model to teach double digit multiplication. I do this in fourth grade with students and it really helps them develop their conceptual understanding. It really helps students see why you can't just multiply the tens with the tens and the ones with the ones. If students are exposed to this model in grade 4, it is a natural extension to use the area model to teach fraction multiplication Here is the area model for mixed numbers. Again it really helps kids see why you can't just multiply the whole numbers together and the fractions together. It is also very efficient and involves less computation (and therefore room for error) than the traditional algorithm for fraction multiplication. As you can see, students must be comfortable multiplying two fractions less than 1 and a fraction by a whole number. Here is the same problem done with a standard algorithm. See how little fraction understanding goes into this way and how much computation takes place? I find once my students know both methods, they pick and choose which to use based on efficiency which is always a great thing! If you are looking for further evidence that the area model can be a great conceptual tool for students learning multiplication, check out how well it works in an algebra classroom. Instead of teaching kids to just FOIL, you can connect their new learning to the knowledge they already have about multiplication. How do you use the area model when teaching multiplication? Respond in the comments below!

Nine weeks into the school year, I am still in love with foldables. I feel like they have made such a difference in the attitudes of my students toward math. At the same time, I'm trying to further develop my teaching strategies beyond foldables and interactive notebooks. Everyone tells me that I am doing a good job, but I know that I could be doing so many things better. I have so much room to grow. I've been doing a lot of research lately on Kagan Cooperative Learning strategies. I just ordered a new book of teaching strategies from Amazon that I can't wait to delve into. I've already tried several of the strategies, and they were amazing. So much to blog about! Here's my latest interactive notebook entries for Algebra 1.
