Mike Mignola is inspired by the characters of Lovecraftian stories, the art style of Jack Kirby and Moebius. Mike Mignola uses very dark shades, often there is no shade just black against other colour as bad as it sounds it works well in the comic industry, inspired by Jack Kirby as you can see the technique in my pin about Kirby. Taking stories from legends changes them to the world of Hellboy, he doesn't have superpowers he's not all good.
