French-Canadian mother, Elzire Dionne, gave birth to five identical girls — Annette, Emilie, Yvonne, Cecile, and Marie. the quints were made wards of the Ontario government (the parents were deemed unfit to raise them). A hospital, known as "Quintland" was built Dionne's home. Nurses would bring them one at a time to a balcony to show them to the waiting crowd.

Early in the Civil War, the nurses had no "uniform." They wore brown, black or blue dresses, an apron, no hoops under their skirts, no ruffles or bows or jewelry.

This service cap was specifically designed for the Army Nurse Corps in 1942. Known at the time as the "new service cap," it was made of different types of materials to match either the winter olive drab, summer beige or dress white uniforms.
