The Pierre Rock House San Juan Islands, Washington Literally nestled in the rocks near the shore of one of Washington state's San Juan Islands, the Pierre — French for stone — was inspired by owner Merrill White's desire to live atop a stone outcropping. Architect Tom Kundig of the Olson Kundig architectural firm went one better, and rather than seating the home about a rock outcropping, he cut into the rock itself to create a stone seat overlooking the sea.

Hashima Island, #Japan--The island was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. The island has been administered as part of #Nagasaki city since the merger of the former town of Takashima in 2005. As petroleum replaced coal in Japan in the 1960s, coal mines began shutting down all over the country. Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of the mine in 1974. Travel to Hashima was re-opened on April 22, 2009 after 35 years of closure.

Tjentište, Yugoslavia. In the 1960s and 70s, former Yugoslavian president Josip Broz Tito wanted to commemorate WWII battles sites and former concentration camp sites with grand structures. They were designed by different sculptors (Dušan Džamonja, Vojin Bakić, Miodrag Živković, Jordan and Iskra Grabul, etc.) and architects (Bogdan Bogdanović, Gradimir Medaković…) in honor of the Socialist Republic.

They were designed by different sculptors and architects. In the 1980s, these monuments attracted millions of visitors per year. After the Republic dissolved in early 1990s, they were completely abandoned, and their symbolic meanings were forever lost
