I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou. I read this when I was 14, and it's still one of my lifetime favorite books. You can just feel Maya's soul pulsating on each page.
In memory of Maya Angelou - worth reading.
"If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat. It is an unnecessary insult." - Maya Angelou, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings #favoritebooks

One of my all time favorite books. The Namesake: A Novel by Jhumpa Lahiri, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003KGAUUQ/ref=cm_sw_r_pi_dp_hUcqqb0QTYDA6
The Namesake, Jhumpa Lahiri (a little slow at first but it picks up - worth reading :)
The second book by author Jhumpa Lahiri. It explores many of the same emotional and cultural themes as her Pulitzer Prize-winning short story collection Interpreter of Maladies. Moving between events in Calcutta, Boston, and New York City, the novel examines the nuances involved with being caught between two conflicting cultures with their highly distinct religious, social, and ideological differences.
