American photographer Mitch Dobrowner captured these black and white photos of approaching storms. The sheer magnitude and power captured in them is pretty incredible!
I'm usually in awe of a specially multicolored sky at sunset, but seeing Mitch Dobrowner's black-and-white photographs of Mother Nature's storms is equally awe-inspiring! Earlier this year, Alice introduced us to some of Dobrowner's spectacular shots and now the photographer has released even more captivating images of active landscapes. The natural beauty of what could be deemed a disaster is remarkable. Looking through the series, I know that these are not man-made, alternatively produced ...

Small volcanic eruptions might eject more of an atmosphere-cooling gas into Earth’s upper atmosphere than previously thought, potentially contributing to the recent slowdown in global warming, according to a new study. http://www.reportingclimatescience.com/news-stories/article/small-volcanoes-offset-global-warming.html

Volcanic Eruption from Space - In this incredible aerial photograph by NASA, we see an overhead view of the Sarychev Peak Volcano erupting on June 12, 2009. Sarychev Peak is a stratovolcano covering almost the entirety of Matua Island in the Kuril Islands of Russia. It is a young, highly symmetrical stratovolcanic cone. - During this particular eruption, the International Space Station happen to be passing directly overhead and astronauts on board were able to capture . . .
Sarychev volcano Awe-inspiring views of volcanic eruptions as seen from Space. While the destruction an erupting volcano can inflict is to be feared in any community living in site of one these fearsome aspects of planet earth's geography, nature's wrath also fascinates. A fortuitous orbit of the International Space Station allowed astronauts this striking view of Sarychev volcano (Russia's Kuril Islands, northeast of Japan) in an early stage of eruption on June 12, 2009. Sarychev Peak is one of the most active volcanoes in the Kuril Island chain and is located on the northwestern end of Matua Island. The main column is one of a series of plumes, which appear to be a combination of brown ash and white steam that rose above Matua Island (48.1 degrees north latitude and 153.2 degrees east longitude). The vigorously rising plume gives the steam a bubble-like appearance.

Sakurajima | 桜島 “Eruption as Seen from Kagoshima,” 1914. The 1914 eruption was the most powerful in 20th century Japan. Lava flows filled the narrow strait between the island and the mainland, turning it into a peninsula. Lava flows are rare in Japan--the high silica content of the magma there mean that explosive eruptions are far more common--but the lava flows at Sakurajima continued for months.

Lightning flashes around the ash plume above the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano chain near Entrelagos..the power of mother nature
The definitive highest quality shot of the lightning flashes around the ash plume of the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano chain near Entrelagos, Chile. (Carlos Gutierrez/Reuters) # Volcano lightning is thought to occur since the ash cloud gives a extra height to the land for the lightning to conduct into and travel down, although there are other theories. Its quite a common phenomenon.

this is volcano lightning near Chile. Lightning flashes around the ash plume at above the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano chain near Entrelagos June 5. The volcano in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain, dormant for decades, erupted in south-central Chile on Saturday, belching ash over 6 miles (10 km) into the sky, as winds fanned it toward neighboring Argentina, and prompted the government to evacuate several thousand residents.
A volcanic eruption and a lightning storm. On June 5, 2011, the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile became volatile for the first time in a decade. The beast belched ash six miles high into the sky while lightning danced around the top of the plume. Scientists have noted that only really large eruptions can generate such thunderbolts, but the origin of the powerful electric charges remains unknown. (REUTERS/Carlos Gutierrez)
