Catherine de Medici’s hairpin found in palace toilet. Conservators have discovered a four-inch gold hairpin that once belonged to Catherine de Medici, wife of King Henry II and Queen of France from 1547 until his death in 1559, in a communal latrine at Fontainebleau Palace.

A hairpin belonging to 16th century French Queen Catherine de Medici has been discovered at a royal residence outside Paris, down a communal toilet. Officials said it's the first time in modern history that a possession of the Renaissance royal has been found at Fontainebleau Palace. The queen was renowned across Europe for her lavish jewelry but much of her collection has been lost, sold or stolen over the centuries
This recent undated photo provided Tuesday, June 19, 2012 by the Seine et Marne region council shows part of a pin recently discovered at Fontainebleau castle, south of Paris. Conservators at Fontainebleau Palace have discovered a hairpin belonging to Renaissance Queen Catherine de Medici. Ernest Hemingway at age 19. The photo was taken in Milan, Italy, 1918. After high school Hemingway enlisted during WWI. He left for the Italian front in 1918. He served in a volunteer ambulance unit, was wounded, and decorated by the Italian government with the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery. During WWII, he was at the Normandy landing, the liberation of Paris, and several other key moments as a war correspondent.
