pacegallery: Reblog of the day: This #ThrowbackThursday pick shows Mark Rothko with one of his commissioned paintings for the Menil Chapel in Houston, TX. These late works, much like works currently on view in our exhibit, Rothko/Sugimoto: Dark Paintings and Seascapes, relate less to any personal tragedy in Rothko’s life, and more to eternal and depersonalized metaphysical questions. artistsinstudio: Rothko in his 69th Street studio with Rothko Chapel murals, c. 1964, © Hans Namuth

Shell Mask Gorget, ca. 1500-1700. North American Indian, Late Mississippian Culture Looks like something right out of a Miyazaki film.
Shell Mask Gorget 1500-1700 This minimally carved and engraved gorget, or ornament worn at the throat, likely held religious meaning. Scholars surmise it may also have been associated with warrior societies. The object was found along the Missouri River in present-day South Dakota, and its discovery suggests a connection between the ancient Mississippian cultures and Plains people. The hole at the bottom may have originally held a feather.

LOVE this kitchen series!: Marina Abramović's 'The Kitchen, Homage To Saint Therese' 2009 "The kitchen was the centre of my world. Wood is not trendy yet it is incredibly cool. It is a demanding, noble, ancient, living material that we have the privilege to use and enjoy. In wood, the architect, designer and builder face the exhilarating challenge of the sculptor — to reveal the character of the specific species, the individual tree. And we, the viewers and users of their work, have the opportunity to discover it for ourselves. We are looking forward to more. - Tuija Seipell.
