Monacan Indians - The Monacan Indian Nation is made up of about 1,700 members located in Amherst County near the Blue Ridge Mountains. The original territory of the tribe comprised more than half of the state of Virginia. The Monacan Nation is one of the oldest groups of indigenous peoples still existing in their ancestral homeland. They are the only group of Eastern Siouan in the state. Monacan people buried the remains of their dead in sacred earthen mounds constructed over time.

Powhatan Tribe – Dominating Virginia in History
Powhatan village, by Sydney King. This illustration was inspired by a 16th-century John White watercolor, courtesy National Park Service. The Powhatan name means "falls in a current of water." At the time European settlers arrived in the Chesapeake Bay, the region was occupied by approximately 14,000-21,000 Powhatan Indians, concentrated in some 200 villages along the rivers. They were hunters, gatherers and considerably advanced in farming, cultivating pumpkins, roots and fruit trees.
