Last week we started our November film series A Dash of Awkward, a Splash of Charming, a series devoted to cinematic dinners that include both uncomfortable and sweet elements. The first film of the series, Rushmore, dealt with a love triangle and the rant of someone completely consumed by the situation. This week, we transition to another dinner inspired by love--motherly love--but which is equally awkward. Edward Scissorhands (1990) In Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands, Edward (Johnny Depp) has a lot to learn about the world outside of his home. When Peg (Dianne Wiest) brings him into her home, her family is not cruel or mean (unlike others in the story). They are, however, intrigued and fascinated by the strange man with scissors for hands. This is demonstrated aptly in a dinner scene. Edward is trying to eat, first attempting to use the utensils, then picking up pieces of food with his scissors. All the while, Peg's son Kevin ( Robert Oliveri) stares with wide eyes at Edward, ignoring his mother's pleas to stop. He comments on the hands and even goes so far to ask about bringing him to show and tell. All the while, Peg's husband Bill (Alan Arkin) makes "small talk." Kevin and Bill all play into stereotypical roles: the father falling into patterns where you expect him to ask about the weather and a young boy who doesn't censor his thoughts or actions. Peg, on the other hand, wants the meal to go perfectly and tries to keep the balance. This a typical and common family dinner scene, which is made awkward by the fact there is not only a strange man in their midst, but he seems unaware of the undercurrent, and the awkward is elevated by the fact that, while the rest of the family chows down on the food, he is only able to pathetically balance single peas on the ends of his blades. The family's disregard for his trouble is a mix of blind politeness, sideshow voyeurism, and in an odd way, love, which in this series equals A Dash of Awkward, a Splash of Charming. Check out the video below and see for yourself. Plus, remember to come back next week for the third installment of the series.
A funny satirical film about a world who are quick to judge appearances rather than what's on the insides. Burton's world has a lot of comedy, mostly from Edward and how he interacts with his scissor hands. For a movie oozing with imagination, it's a shame the ending had to devolve into a fight to the death between Edward and the Jock, which, personally, didn't feel like it fit. 7/10

I love 90s fashion!
Am I the only one that has noticed that the fashion trends right now are all about bringing back the 90s. Crop tops, motorcycle boots, maxi skirts and dresses, jean jackets and vests and hats are all the rage right now. I for one am thrilled all this is back. I was a little too young in the actual 90s to embrace these looks. When they were big I was still shopping at Gap Kids (of course I was buying overalls and those are all the rage as well!) But I do find this fascinating as all these great outfits remind me of those classic 90s shows and movies that displayed all these fashions at their best. I think the one that sticks out the most to me is Reality Bites. Oh I just wanted to be Winona Ryder in that movie so badly. Loved her pants and blouses but I think most of all I loved those incredibly soft t-shirts she wore. Soft tees were so 90s. Oh my gosh and that haircut? Adorable. Winona Ryder was the ittest of the it girls. Here are some more great 90s fashion moments. OMG those jeans. The very obscure California Dreams. Whatever happened to these people? Look at that crop top. Oh the brilliant My So-Called Life. Flowers and flannels. That was the 90s. The Craft! I just loved this musical montage. Remember those necklaces with the crosses and the tiny white sweaters? Ahhh! God that was a good movie. OMG Singles. The 90s were so great. You could wear a flannel with anything. Even a polka dot skirt. If you haven't seen it, watch it now. With Honors. Oh that haircut and the jean vest. And the Mothership. And now on to the people trying to recreate these looks. Seriously though Miranda Kerr looks like she is auditioning for The Real World 1996. She is one sunflower hat away from Blossom territory. Miranda Kerr Jamie Chung Rachel Bilson Seriously?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brief Movie Synopsis [courtesy of Turner Classic Movies]: Frustrated writer Jack Torrance takes a job as the winter caretaker at the ominous, mountain-locked Overlook Hotel so that he can write in peace. When he arrives there with his wife and son, they learn that the previous caretaker had gone mad. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- REVIEWS: "Slowly told but satisfying 'man-goes-bonkers' tale. Jack Nicholson is superb. And this DVD has one of the best Making-Of extras ever made." -- David Von Pein "Mr. Nicholson's Jack [Torrance] is one of his most vibrant characterizations, furiously alive in every frame and fueled by an explosive anger. Mr. Nicholson is also devilishly funny, from his sarcastic edge at the film's beginning to his cry of 'Heeere's Johnny!' as he chops down a bathroom door to get to Miss Duvall. .... Meticulously detailed and never less than fascinating, 'The Shining' may be the first movie that ever made its audience jump with a title that simply says 'Tuesday'." -- Excerpt from The New York Times; May 23, 1980 "Stanley Kubrick's cold and frightening 'The Shining' challenges us to decide: Who is the reliable observer? Whose idea of events can we trust? .... In a snowbound hotel, three people descend into versions of madness or psychic terror, and we cannot depend on any of them for an objective view of what happens. It is this elusive open-endedness that makes Kubrick's film so strangely disturbing. .... 'How was it, working with Kubrick?' I asked [Shelley] Duvall 10 years after the experience. 'Almost unbearable,' she said. 'Going through day after day of excruciating work, Jack Nicholson's character had to be crazy and angry all the time. And my character had to cry 12 hours a day, all day long, the last nine months straight, five or six days a week. I was there a year and a month. After all that work, hardly anyone even criticized my performance in it, even to mention it, it seemed like. The reviews were all about Kubrick, like I wasn't there.' Like she wasn't there." -- Roger Ebert; June 18, 2006 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUDIO/VIDEO: ORIGINAL THEATRICAL TRAILER: MOVIE CLIP #1: MOVIE CLIP #2: MOVIE CLIP #3: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- PHOTO GALLERY: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- BUY THIS MOVIE: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- STEPHEN KING: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- LINKS: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
