A site intervention by katty vandenberghe commemorating all the genocides and atrocities that took place across the African continent due to slavery, colonialism, and apartheid. Southern Africa has experienced some of the worst atrocities, like the British Anglo-Boer war concentration camps, the Namibian Herero and Nama genocides, Germany's first Namibian extermination camps, and an apartheid system we are still wrestling with. This intervention represents a series of disintegrating skulls. Wrestling, British, Southern Africa, Extermination Camp, Apartheid

Intervention (dragon) by Western Cape Land Art co-founder Janet Ranson. Janet used turn of the 20th century glass fragments found on site. The Snake Eagle Thinking Path is on a heritage site. This means that artists are not allowed to remove materials from site, but by invitation they are allowed to use the material for interventions that are not destructive, invasive, and complement the characteristics of the site. katty vandenberghe Artists, Heritage Site, Fragments, Heritage

Due to the wet conditions, our lime discs would capture footprints of animals walking over them. We suspect this is a small dog from the Matjiesfontein community. Matjiesfonteins' dogs are allowed to walk freely and follow their humans around town, sometimes following them to work. Other animals identified on site through their droppings, footprints, or sightings include wild rabbits, tortoises, small antelope, porcupines, jackals and other smaller mammals. katty vandenberghe Rabbits, Small Dogs, Dog, Animals, Dogs, Wild Rabbit, Porcupine, Mammals

A new member joins the Site_Specific team in Matjiesfontein - Mirella Bandini at the Lord Milner Hotel pub with PC van Rensburg, Alnick the barman and a hotel staff member in his period uniform. PC takes it upon himself to initiate new team members into the project, especially if there's rain and nothing else to do but visit the pub. After four trips to Matjiesfontein, PC and Alnick are well acquainted, renaming that corner of the pub the Snake Eagle Thinking Path corner. katty vandenberghe Lord, Lord Milner Hotel, Hotel Staff, Pub, Lord Milner, Hotel

This work grew out of all the debris littering the site which had been a training and transit camp during the Anglo-Boer war. Thousands of young British conscripts spent time there before going off to fight and die in the war. The site was littered with colourful broken glass and rusty 100+-year-old old tin cans - bully beef and condensed milk among others, many of which had bullet and shrapnel holes in them.
