Purple Robot Here's a creative project for a scout troop, summer camp, or other group activity. Encourage kids to bring found objects from home to incorporate into their robot to make it "their own." Completion Time - 1-2 hours Designer - Kathleen George STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam Cube, 3" Balls, 2", two Balls, 1", two Ball, 2-1/2" Other Materials Craft wire Wooden skewers Silver buttons, four Silver bead Acrylic craft paint: your color choice Thick white craft glue Embellishments of choice Tools Needed Instructions Using a serrated knife, have supervising adult cut in half the 2-1/2" and two 2" balls of STYROFOAM™ brand foam. Hint: Wax knife blade with old candle or bar of soap for easier cutting. Glue a 2½" half ball to the top of the cube. Save remaining half for future project. Cut wooden skewer into three, 3½" lengths using knippers. Insert each skewer into the rounded tops of the halves of 2" ball". Remove skewers, add glue to holes, and reinsert. On bottom of cube, mark three dots with a marker, creating a triangle. Insert other end of each skewer into marked points; remove skewers, add glue to holes, and reinsert. Stand robot on its feet and level the legs so the cube stands straight. Paint body and two, 1" balls; let dry thoroughly. Tightly wind 10" pieces of craft wire tightly around the handle of a broom or similar object, creating two spring arms. Push one end into side of cube, remove, add glue, and insert again. Repeat for second arm. Using low-temp glue, attach 1" balls to the other ends for hands. Tightly wind a 6" length of craft wire around a pencil to create antenna. Glue a bead onto one end and insert and glue other end into top of head. Press silver buttons onto the front of the robot, adding glue if needed. Add additional embellishments, if desired.

Our last Space craft has to do with aliens! I saw these cute alien handprints over at Red Ted's Art Blog. As each child got dropped off in the morning, I painted their hand. They got to choose how many fingers would be painted. Within an hour or so they were all dry and the kids could add wiggle eyes and draw the rest of their alien. They turned out so cute, and what kid doesn't like talking about and creating aliens?! I also brought in astronaut ice cream for the kids to try. (I bought it through Amazon.) They all loved it. I don't think adults would feel the same way, though. And before I officially end my space unit posts, I wanted to tell you about a couple books I read. Space Robots and Why Isn't Pluto a Planet? Pluto hasn't been a planet since before the kids in my class were born, but I still told them all about it. And the books are geared toward older children (ages 6 and up), but I read them anyway because they are written by my brother! I already mentioned I have a brother in Houston that designs robots for NASA, but I also have another brother in Tucson, AZ, who is an astronomer. He's written several non-fiction children's books about space (through series like First Facts and Incredible Space). You can find them here. They aren't the cheapest books (my brother donated a bunch to me and other family members), but maybe you can find them in your local library. I hope you enjoyed my space unit!
Star Light, Star Bright. First star I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, Have the wish I wish tonight. You remember that poem, right? I recited it for my kids and only a few of them recognized it. After learning about the sun, our closest star, we painted our own wishing stars. I drew several stars using a template I had. The kids used fingerpaints to paint their star. We used paint brushes with the fingerpaint because it's so much brighter than the regular paint. I couldn't resist taking a picture of the spoons after I scooped out the paint! Maybe it's just me, but I think it's so pretty! After painting the stars, the kids used my little glitter shakers to add a touch of sparkle. When they were dry, I cut them out. Then I asked each child what their wish would be. I'm not going to lie to you. It didn't go well. And it took FOREVER! Most of the children didn't really understand, and it was so hard to explain it without giving an example. (I knew if I gave an example, they would just use that as their wish.) The best I could come up with was, "If your fairy godmother came down and used her magic wand to give you anything you wanted, what would it be?" But even that's not great because it leads them toward picking an object, when a wish could really be about anything. So anyway, I wrote down their answers on a little card and displayed them next to their stars in the hallway. (I wanted to write directly on the star, but with the glitter and all I didn't think it would work that well.) I also printed out the poem and hung that up with the stars. I think another cool idea would be to use glow-in-the-dark paint on the stars! It just might be dark enough in our hallway during nap time that it would work! I have one more Space craft to share with you tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Ultimate Alphabet Craft Collection - Letter Rr
Monday is officially our first day of the new school year, and I can hardly wait! This year, I will be working with Super Tot on learning his letters. We will be doing one new letter each week, and having a review week every 6 weeks. I have always loved the letter crafts that I have seen on various blogs, and I knew I wanted to incorporate that concept into our lessons. Some of the crafts I have seen use the letters at different angles, which I thought might confuse Super Tot during the time that he is initially learning them. I hope to do this type of activity each year, so I know I will use those in the future. However, my creative side also wanted to create some new crafts that I hadn't seen before. I was unable to be original with some of the letters, but you might find some new ideas and inspiration here. Super Tot will be doing these crafts as he learns the letters, but I have put together an ABC Book for him that shows my examples. Here they are: Cover: A is for Angel: a is for apple: B is for Beaver: b is for balloon: C is for Clown: c is for clock: D is for Dog: d is for dinosaur: E is for Eagle: e is for electric eel: F is for Flag: f is for flower: G is for Goose: g is for grapes: H is for Hair: You can't tell in the picture, but the hair is fringed on both the top and bottom. h is for hive: I is for Icicle: i is for inch: J is for Jar of Jelly: j is for jaguar: K is for Kite: k is for kangaroo: L is for Lighthouse: l is for ladybug: M is for Mittens: m is for microphone: N is for Nails: n is for nest: O is for Otter: While I am generally fairly artistic, I botched drawing this otter 3 times. I ended up finding this one online and printing it onto brown construction paper. o is for orange: P is for Peacock: p is for pumpkin: Q is for Queen: q is for quilt: R is for Raccoon: r is for rainbow: S is for Swan: s is for scarf: T is for Table: t is for turtle: U is for Unicorn: u is for umbrella: V is for Vase: v is for vine: W is for Watermelon: w is for worm: X is for Xylophone: x is for x-ray: Y is for Yolk: y is for yarn: Z is for Zebra: z is for zipper: Now I know my ABC's! I hope you are inspired! Linking to: 1+1+1=1 Sun Scholars No Time for Flashcards Mom to 2 Posh Little Divas Preschool Corner Our Country Road The Ultimate Alphabet Collection ABC & 123

I just wanted to do a follow up of our rocket shape collages that we made yesterday with my son's little class. They were a BIG hit! The class was mostly 3 yr olds. I had 10 kids and led the craft alone, so I tried only having 2-3 kids at a time...but some of them got so excited and wanted to get started... so eventually I had 8 kids working all at the same time. Not ideal, but once they got the gluing done, all of them could use stickers and markers independently... so it wasn't really a big deal. Notes from the activity: - I covered each paper with a good amount of glue so that the kids could stick the rocket parts on themselves. When I was working with 2-3 kids, they each got to squeeze their own glue on. I just monitored them to make sure they didn't put too much. - If our classroom had had glue sticks, we would've used those... but I forgot to bring mine from home. Oops! - While kids waited for help or glue, we sang "Zoom zoom zoom" (our rocket song). - I had sparkly jewels that we stuck on the rockets as their "start" buttons. Those were their absolute favorite things! - They also LOVED the tin foil. I love how anything sparkly or shiny is an automatic hit with little kids. - Next time I will have the kids draw planets and stars on their background papers first... just to expand the activity and foster conversation about more things. The kids loved talking about the different parts of the rockets, the colors that they were using, and the shapes that they saw. A few other favorite rocket craft ideas that we've loved are... Paper towel roll foil rocket Firework Candy Rocket Pops Recycled Rocket craft from No Time for Flashcards Do you have any favorite rocket crafts??
